Should I buy the dealer injection service on my '03 as part of injector replacement?

I dropped my '03 at the dealer on Monday with the usual long/no start problem that has been frequently discussed here. I asked for a diagnosis (I told them not to perform the lift pump relocation if that was the cause). Truck is still under warantee. I just got the call from the dealer - definitely 3 injectors are bad and will be replaced under warantee (there is a $100. 00 deductible). The tech is testing the last 3 right now and these will be replaced as well if found to be bad. The service manager asked if I would like to pay out of pocket for their $183. 00 injector service package while the truck is there. He recommended this so that if there is anything in the rail/lines/cylinders it will be cleaned out before going with the new injectors. I did check the TSB 14-003-06 for my problem and did not find the cleaning as part of the correction (only replace the leaking injectors and then perform the powertrain verification test). I told him I would call him back tommorrow AM with my decision. Any advice?

Do you have an extended warranty?



The injectors and associated equipment are covered under the 5 year/100k mile warranty. There should be no charge to you if it is still within those.

I bought the truck used in May '08. There is a 7 year/100k warantee on the engine which I am within the limits on. I am not sure if this is the base engine warantee or the previous owner bought an extended warantee, but the dealer is recognizing this work as under this 7/100 engine warantee. They are telling me that there is a $100. 00 deductible for work performed under the warantee. My question is for the injector service (cleanout) which they are telling me is not under the warantee. Should I pay for this and have them do it?

They will be replacing the injectors. The injection service that they are recommending I pay them to do sounds like they run a mixture through the rail, lines and cylinder to remove any deposits/contaminents before putting in the new injectors.

Call dodge home office and ask them. I thank that should come under warranty. I would tell the dealer that would be in his better half to do it free. That way you might not half to come back ! Warranty work does not pay good to the dealer.

Suggest to dealership, since they're responsible for doing the injector work that it's to their advantage to do the line clean-out as part of the work.



OR offer to pay materials cost, maybe $20 and they pick up the labor.



Possible dealer reply is to imply any further injector problems could very well be your fault if you don't buy their clean-out service offer.

I can not imagine a diesel tech risking some dirt to cut a corner. Always clean it all up.

Maybe they will re-use an old fuel filter to save some cash!!!!

The hundreds of rail cores and lines I have seen cannot be clean with any type of so called miracle solution. O I suppose you could spray Brake cleaner and call it good... . but most always need to be machined cleaned... I call BS.

I would tend to agree with TWest on this, but I'd like to hear Sag2's or Bob4x4's opinion on the matter. [Or maybe they don't want to chime in for fear of retribution?]

Thanks for your comments guys. I spoke service this morning. Turns out the other 3 injectors are bad too and I will be getting all 6 injectors replaced under the 7/100k engine warantee. I checked on the dodge.com website under the "for owners" tab and in there under the warantee link the downloadable warantee info for my '03 shows that the $100. 00 deductible is legitimate. Their language basically states that the diesel has a 7/100 warantee starting after the 3/36 is over with a $100. 00 deductible per service visit for yehicles over 5 years old. $100. 00 for new injectors isn't bad, though.



For the question of the "injector service package" he said that he did have some paperwork on it which I will get, research and post. I told him not to do the service at this time especially since the injection system is already apart and they would be performing the service on the system after it was rebuilt with the new injectors. If this service does work to clean out the soot and contaminents it will just flush all of this stuff through the new injectors? So no service for now pending further research. The truck only has 58k on it anyway.



I'll let everyone know what the product they use for the treatment is when I pick up my truck.

I don't know why. This was one of the things he was trying to sell me on. Between the incomplete/incorrect reasoning for why I should have this extra work done and that it would be performed after the system was rebuilt, I decided not to have this "treatment" performed. I will wait to see the paperwork they give me about this when I pick up the truck.

They're just trying to scare you so they can make a profit on the injection cleaning service. You'll have new injectors so they don't need cleaning. If there was any crap in the fuel lines they would deny the warranty claim.

Anyone who suggests your fuel lines might contain soot is either intentionally misrepresenting his product or clueless.



Soot is a byproduct of combustion. If you've got combustion in your fuel system you have bigger problems to worry about than soot formation.
