If you click the little round icon on the far left of the main page, the subject you select will show up in a search for new posts. If it's red, it doesn't - if it's gray, it does.

The forum main page that lists all the topics. It's the circle on the far left with the "S" in the center (well, after you select it, it will have an "S" in the center  ).

Look down at the bottom of the list of forums and there is a box that explains those. Basically if they are light grey there are no new posts in that forum, dark grey means there's new posts in that forum since the last time you were on, and if there is a lock on it that means that is a locked forum (which we don't have any). BTW, things like your original question are in the website FAQ forum right at the top of this one. That is covered in How do I choose what forums will show up in "View New Posts" and searches?.

I personally don't care to have posts from "other" and "politics" come up on a search - my blood pressure is high enough already!

BUT, it shouldn't be that hard for "smart" file server to recognize whether the one initiating the search is a member or not, and then search accordingly...

Non members can't search at all Gary. Members have the choice to pick which forums show up in their searches. Just look on the forum home page and to the left of each forum there is an S in a circle - if it's red with a slash through it that forum won't show up (unless you specifically tell it to search ALL forums), if it's grey it will. Just click on it to change from one to the other.
