SHould you remove the boot between the airbox and the fender??

I see different opinions on this subject >I had a nice conversation with Ted Jannety on the phone and he said to remove it. Then I spoke to someone else and they said to leave it on, it was better to get fresh air then to get all that hot engine air. Was looking for both sides on this as far as people who have done it and not done it and no offense Ted . I tried it for a few days then put it back in. Also looking at Psychotty but was told engine noise increased in the cab and not reaaly keen on drilling that big hole in the firewall. Wouldnt it be nice to turn the factory box and run a hose straight to the front of the truck near the radiator. Also is psychotty the only replacement for the factory air box. THANKS
 
I asked Joe Donnelly the same thing. He said very simply "Do you want hot air, or no air?"

I took the boot out. Not sure if it runs better, but it darn sure didn't hurt anything here in Texas with 112 degrees ambient temperature.

Take the "boot" out. Mine has been
out for a long time with no problems.
I believe "Koa Man" has the
"Psychotty" and is pretty happy
with it.

Take the boot out. I could pull 10" of H2O on the filter minder by running it hard up the hill. Took the boot out and the filter minder did not move. Put the boot back in just because I didnt believe it and pulled 10" H2O again so out the boot came and it staying out. The filter minder hasnt moved since.

Another 2 Cents
The boot between the air box and the fender only does one thing --that is to complete the supply of fresh Dirty air to the filter box. The faster you drive the more air is rammed into the filter when the tunnel is completed.
Now if you want more air you need more holes on the dirty side of the air box. Dont get carried away get a 3/4 hole saw for your drill and drill 4 or five holes on the front end facing the exh manfoild .
Better yet cut a larger hole install a 3" tube to the hood and install a scoop!!!$$$$
Cheaper with the 3/4 holes.
The filter minder is mounted to measure the restricksion on the clean side of the filter and if i removed the fender boot and saw a drop on the Minder and hooked up it increased i would look for something pluging the tunnel which is between the inter and outer fender and runs up to the Grill!
 
I took mine out. I am a little worried about driving it in heavy snow though. Snow tends to pack it self pretty good in the area of the air cleaner box. This has come my own experience with snow.
 
I opened up the box next to the fender, noticable improvement in airflow, little louder tubo sound in the cab. I also have K&N filter. be carful with the plastic the filter box is made out of, seems to be very brittle. Throw the boot away.

Take the boot out. I've ment to do it but haven't had time. Air is still going to go up tunnel to air filter. But filter can pull a little more air in from engine compartment.
My main reason for taking it off would be to keep water from being inhaled by filter.
Had ford van sip a little water during down pour(rained cats,dogs and horses) on highway thru its air intake tunnel. When I got home I unhooked tunnel, never had the problem again. (Air from tunnel made it to air filter, indirectly).
 
Poped the hood and noted my air flow meter was setting at 10 inches. Pulled the boot and went for a test drive in the foothills really put my foot in it to give it the true test. Was shocked at the results the flow meter was on zzzzero. This means to me three things (1) better milage(2)better engine response(3)more hp. That boot between the air filter box and the fender is off and in my trash can for next tuesday departure. Thanks mush for the input and responses I just love it when my truck jumps and shouts. Just a stupid question. When you guys are claiming to look at this air flow meter, Im asssuming its the little thinh on top of the air box where the filter goes... Just where did you find the little miget to ride under the hood while you took the test drive and read the meter??

I've always felt that the boot was Dodge's way to get you thru warranty without providing an EGT gauge, an adequate exhaust system and beefer drivetrain. Restrict the airflow and you can never reach dangerous EG temps nor the power the CTD is capable of. IMHO take off the boot and while your at install a K&N or Amsoil air filter,then a 4" exaust,then... Boot removal is the first step to bombing,remember the saying "the first one's free"?

The filter minder on the air box sticks at the maximum reading. You have to push the button on the top to reset it.

I was showing the filter minder about half way up until I drilled two holes in the side of the bottom part of the air box toward the fire wall. No indication of restriction since then. I really don't think there is much practical difference in air temp at highway speeds for air thru the fender or directly from the engine room. The air is moving pretty fast to absorb much heat from the engine at highway speeds. Then it goes thru a pretty good air heater regardless of the air source. I'll bet the turbo is almost glowing when you are really pulling so it heats up the air pretty good before giving it to the intercooler. Of course, I don't think I'm going to ride under the hood to take the turbo's temp so that's just a guess. #ad
