I think she might be going. The transmission that is. I'm getting a shudder when I think the TC locks up. Not when I get on it either which is bothering me.

I was going to upgrade my transmission with a company in New England but now I'm in the South East and don't know if the transmission is going to last.

Does anybody know what is going on with the transmission or is it the TC converter. Any thoughts? I'd like to boost the power to 300 so what do I need to do this. Thanks

If I remember correctly from our little get together with Bill K. I think it's the springs in the torque converter loading and unloading. If the converter isn't actually slipping I don't think it's a problem. There was so much info, I'm hoping I remember that right. Anybody else?

Diesel Dunn:

I recently went through the same thing
on my truck. My stock transmission
lasted until I reached 98,000 miles.
Then the "shuddering" started when I
was towing and the TC reached lockup
just like yours. Shortly thereafter,
it started slipping. Believe me, it
will only get worse! My torque converter
was bad along with the front clutch
packs (metal plates were fried) and
the seals. When you upgrade, make sure
you do EVERYTHING! I tried replacing
just the TC and valve body and at about
9,000 miles later had to go back in!
Don't make the mistake I did.

On your BOMBING plans if you go to a
#4 or #5 TST plate, 370 Diamond B Inj's,
governor and AFC spring kits and a timing
change you will be over 300 H. P.

Hope this helps you some.

Okay so now the TC is locking and unlocking. Where do I go from here? I was going to have a place up north do it but I'm in FLA for a little while.

A friend of mine used a transmission shop and he said they did great work. What do I order and what about buying a transmission that is "built for my needs" or something like that. I can't afford to have my truck down for more than a couple of days.

I looked at some vendors on TDR and would love some input. The ideal situation would be a transmission already built for me, plus a TC then have a shop swap them out and me send them back. Anything heard of something like that?

Also who would you all recomend. If you don't want to post recomendations email them to me.

Diesel Dunn:

You can get a completely rebuilt
transmission from "Scheid Diesel" in
Effingham, Illinois. Their phone #
is: 1-800-669-1934. This transmission has
all new parts, new TC, valve body etc.
They will swap your old one for their
new one and they keep several in stock
most of the time. They also will give
you a one year/50,000 mile warranty on
parts and labor on the new unit. You can
talk to either Mike Wood or Rick.

Also are you aware of "Suncoast Trans-
mission" in Fort Walton Beach, Florida
(up in the panhandle)? Several of the
members have reported good results with
his products. His phone # is:1-800-868-
0053. I guess they would be a little
closer to you.

Hope this helps you. Good luck. Let me
know how you come out!

Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. I'm buying all the parts from a place up north that i've had a very good dealing with. I found a guy that has done work on dodges down here and has done a good job on other stuff. He also seems very honest which is good.

Now i'm wondering if I should just have ordered the whole thing to be swaped out. I like the TC converter that the place up north has but what happens if I replace just the valve body and the pan. They said I should be fine, also the transmission guy is going to check over the whole thing and change the bands and things like that.

Which way should I go. I'm trying to decide what to do.

Also which is the largest plate I can put in my truck without changing the injectors? How much horsepower should I get from this plate?

DieselDunn:

I HIGHLY recommend going through the entire
transmission with as many miles as you have
on your truck! Like I said before, I replaced
the TC and valve body on mine and then had
to go back in to have the clutch packs and
seals done. I guarantee you yours are
probably worn. Save yourself some money,
use me as an example of "how NOT to do it. "
When they change your TC they will already
"be inside" the transmission anyway.

On your question about the "largest cam
plate" I would say the #5 TST (270 H. P. )
would be about the limit for your pump.
I had that plate in mine BEFORE all the
other mods and had no problems. You can
e-mail either Mark Chapple TST or Joe
Donnelly and they can let you know for
sure.

One last thing, be careful on the "stall
speed" of the TC you buy. Mine is "1600"
and BEFORE the installation of the 370
injectors and pump mods I had a "flat spot"
or "lag" off the line. So did "Koa Man. "
If you are not planning to "BOMB" your
truck I would suggest a higher stall speed
more near stock, 1800-2200 RPM.

BTW. did you ever get the e-mail I sent
you??
