I recently purchased an '01 2500 4x4 w/the manual 6 speed and about 70k on the odometer. The truck appears clean and runs well. I am, however, noticing a fairly forceful "shudder" as I shut the engine down, even if I let it idle for a minute first. Is this typical? If not, what may be causing it?
 
sounds pretty normal to me. You know how big that crank that's spinning around in there is? And how big the pistons and rods are? Lots of momentum coming to a fairly screaming halt when you turn off the key. I too get quite the jerk around when I shut her down.
 
Shudder on shut down

Try letting it cool down for 2-3 minutes (by your watch) and see if it isn't better. If mine is shut down too quick it will shudder. Otherwise it's smooth. Just a big dead silence :{
 
Keep your door closed until the shutdown is complete. The "shudder" puts a lot of stress on the door hinges and mounts if the door is open. Reprots of body cracks around the mounts have been related to this.
 
Yep, they shake like a dog passing peach pits when you shut 'em down. They'll usually yelp like that same dog as they come to a stop. That ole Cummins is an uncivilized beast, isn't it! :D

First time I have seen it compared with the bowel habits of a Redneck's dog :D Just out of curosity, why would a 5or6 spd shake more than an auto? Both SHOULD be shut down the same. You do engage the clutch, right. :rolleyes: An auto should be shifted to N for cooling, so both engines are disconnected from the driveline. so what am I missing?
 
The HO's at least have a higher compression, so that would account for the difference between the 6 speed and the autos.
 
Yep it's as normal as Paris Hilton Ringing Heidi Fleiss' doorbell. There is ALOT of reciprical mass going on. That is one reason the Autos Chirp and the Manual guy's do not. You rowing folk can disconnect your ENTIRE driveline which lets everything spin down. Whereas we lazy boys still have a pump , converter , and shafts still connected even tho we are in nutral or park. That contributes to the famous chirp that ya hear because all that extra stuff halts the motor quick! Then the belt and accessories want to keep going but the engine is actually stopping Them too!



The stick trucks squeeze out a few extra RPM's on shutdown than we can so that in turn makes it feel like a shudder. (Which I think is the SECCOND best thing with a 6 speed H. O ... First being that Throttle Burp when you let the clutch out in nutral) To me I like to hear theese heavy engines wind down.



B. T W You are letting the truck idle down before shutdown yes? Even with a somewhat "Cold" engine I will let that turbo cool down.
 
I just wheel up to the parking space, shift into neutral, stomp the emergency brake, and shut down. It has always shuddered to a halt, never paid it any mind as it doesn't seem too much different from the other manual transmission vehicles I have driven.



Had a miserable POS '80 Mustang with 4-banger, when I shut it down the little engine would wheeze and shiver to a halt like one of those old foot-pumped Singer sewing machines. It might have thrashed harder if it had more torque, but it could only muster about 2 ft-lbs, well maybe 3 ft-lbs when I had my left leg sticking out the door trying to kick us up to speed.



By comparison the Cummins' "how DARE you shut me down!" struggle is very reassuring :D :D
