Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Shutdown Solenoid Install

Just installed a new shutdown solenoid and after installation the solenoid still would not pull up when ignition is bumped. I know that the red wire that goes to the plug is ignition which holds the arm up, the white wire runs off of the oil pressure switch which tells the solenoid to pull the arm up when spinning the motor over, and that the black is ground. I took a test light and tested all of the connections and they all work properly but the arm will still not pull up. If you pull the arm up with the ignition on then it will stay but it just will not pull up by itself. What could be the problem?
 
First of all, welcome on board. Secondly, go ahead and ship me the removed solenoid, I'll despose of it, no charge.



A couple of things come to mind on the no pull on; check the blue wire connected to the postive terminal of the batter on the drivers side. If connected, just remove, clean and reinstall. If that doesn't do it, then I'd go to Radio Shack, buy a 30amp relay for 6 bucks or so, and replace the small relay that goes to the solenoid.

What year is your truck? The white wire is from the fuel solenoid relay which is activated when the key is turned to start. My truck starts instantly. No wait for oil pressure.



As moparguy says. The fuel solenoid relay or the blue wire (fuse link) are most likely the problem. As far as I know the oil pressure switch is not involved.
 
It would be nice if they had stuck with one combination of wire colors from year to year. Fortunately, operation is the same.



Two of the wires to the solenoid are #10 gauge and the third is #20 gauge.



With the ignition on only the #20 gauge run circuit should be hot. With ignition off, nothing should be hot.



The #10 gauge pull up wire should only be hot when the ignition switch is in the start position.



The #10 gauge black wire is ground.



If you have voltage at the connector to the solenoid as described above.

you need to check out the solenoid and it's wiring. The solenoid can be checked with an ohm meter.

You should have continuity between the ground wire and each of the other two.
