I ran into a guy at the RV dump site yesterday who asked me if my truck made the same noises his did. He has a 07 QC LB 4wd 6. 7 Auto, with a single piece drive shaft (I didn't look).

He says that he has what he describes as LSD chatter from the rear end, and it's bad. He is on his 2nd OEM LSD (under Warranty) and it didn't change it. He put airbags on it because a shop told him the pinion angle would effect the chatter, they didn't really have an effect. It happens worse in corners, but says he can feel it on straight away take-offs as well. He is going to try some friction modifier. Happens towing or not, and isn't repeatable with specific scenarios.

Any thoughts?

It is not the differential. If it was chattering from the LSD, one wheel would need to be turning faster then the other. If he has 2 different size tires, maybe. It is most likely drive line shudder.

Friction modifier will ruin the Trac Rite differential. This differential has no "clutch" material in it for the friction modifier to work with. The "shoes" that are used in the Trac Rite will not engage properly and cause all kinds of noises.

Hoefler, I agree completely. I told him it was probably in the drive line, but not sure where to start. I suggested a carrier bearing, but he said it was a 1 piece shaft already.

I have heard of several people fixing a LSD like chatter, not the same based on diff design, with additive in this axle. It's not common but some of the shoes on the Trac Rite can make some noise, but only when turning.
