For those of you who have modified your exhaust system to exit before the rear wheels, do you have any problems with soot on the side of the truck? Also, does the side exit cause any increase in sound levels inside the cab? Any problems with the side exit exhaust?
There were some good photos floating around here at one time. One in particular was a black dually... perhaps owned by a performance diesel shop owner. It was actually dual tips I think.
You'll get soot for sure if you don't angle it down a little and extend out slightly. Highway draft tends to cause exhaust to go upwards naturally so you'll need some down to counter this effect.
I ran my 94 like that for a few years. (I just removed it to put on a single stack a couple weeks ago) I went to a stack because of the traction bars. (heavy load would make contact)
It is just a little louder in the cab. I had a 4" straight-thru, glass packed, Dynomax muffler, so it was a bit louder than stock anyway.
The rear center cap was always darkened with soot. I ran without the rears for a bit until I swapped my chrome caps for a set of black ones.
I liked the fact that it was shorter, simpler, and not so vulnerable to backing into a snow pile, etc. Here's a picture:
