Which silacone sealer should be used when changing rear end oil to synthetic??? I changed mine to amsoil about a year ago and it started to drip a few months later. Now the drip is getting worse.

I changed my 98 and it never leaked but can't remember what I used.

I used the black high temp. rtv silicone on mine and it is drip free. Off the top of my head I think it is made by Permatech. Some people have said they had the best luck with the gray high temp. They also have a gasket maker called "The Right Stuff" which is suppose to be excellent also.

Permatex High Temp RTV - the gray stuff - has worked fine for me. This looks like what the factory used that had to be cleaned off when I switched to Royal Purple 85W-140 synthetic.

I don't think it matters which one you use, at least as far as the synthetic oil is concerned.

I don't remember which silicone I used on my differential last, but it was probably whatever was in my toolbox. I have had a leak or two with petroleum oil, but none with Amsoil. I don't attribute this to the oil. I think I have just finally learned how to do the job correctly.

One important point about silicone RTV: IT GOES BAD. (No, I don't mean that it starts to do drugs and steal things. ) Old silicone RTV will not set up. I found this out the hard way, with a bathroom job. I'm glad it wasn't something on my beloved trucks. In my case, GE replaced the sealant with some fresh tubes and paid me for my time to re-do the job. This was after I chewed the guy out about not putting expiration dates on the tubes.

The rule: If you don't know for sure that it is fresh, buy new silicone RTV for any critical jobs.

Good luck.

How many quarts did you use ?

How many quarts did you use in the gear box and did you do the front and the read with Amsoil ( which type).

FirehouseBBQ: I do not have a 4x4 so no front change. I didn't understand your question about read amsoil???

I went to the dodge ******* and bought their gray sealer. Cost $7. 50 but gives me peace of mind. I also got 1 bottle of friction modifier.

The last two times I have installed Amsoil 2000 I had to add the modifier.

Thanks for the input guys.
