I did a search on how to take out the silencer ring, got some good insight, went outside ready to take it on... . The Snap-Ring breaks are at the 12 o'clock position, tried for a few minutes anyway, no luck. Don't know what to do now--

Does anyone know the proper procedure for cleaning an AFE drop in? Is there a kit?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've always had the best luck using a mini common screwdriver. Some of the ring pop right out, and some I'll fight for 10 minutes. Just rotate the ring until you can get to one of the edges easily, and then try to get under it and pry it towards the front of the truck. With enough prodding it'll pop out of there!

Banshee,

I need your touch! My ring doesn't seem to want to rotate and where the ends are now (about 9 o'clock) I'm working blind!

snap ring

The snap ring has two edges. One is angled so that you can get a screwdriver underneath and the other isn't . Use your wifes/girlfriends compact mirror to see what you are doing.

I'll try the mirror trick next time, I did notice the edges were different and my screwdriver is old and rounded so I touched it up on a grinder. I was starting to feel it come out but ran out of daylight! Score remains, snap ring 1, Bill 0!!

I had the best luck getting at mine from under the truck------took maybe 2 minutes----------It took longer taking everything off than getting the ring out. Also mine was at about 11 o'clock

They can be real pain. I think it took 3 screwdrivers for me to get the last one out. It should rotate and you'll be better off when it does. The alternative is seing everything backwards in a mirror or standing on your head.

I may wait until the next oil change and try from below with the oil filter out. I still couldn't get it to rotate and I was afraid of scratching up the metal too much. Is it worht the trouble?

I removed mine at one oil change and put it back in at the next. I didn't notice much more whistle and I feel the compressor is more efficient with it. That said, at the following oil change I installed a tag and an AFE magnumforce and now I've got more whisle. I think it would be downright loud if I removed the TAG.

I tried for several minutes using a screwdriver to pry out the silencer ring, with no luck. So I tried a small needle nose pliers. The ribs on the pliers gripped the ring really well and the ring popped right out
