I have tried everything that has been suggested in the previous threads on this topic and nothing is working. I have tried it with the engine cold and hot. I've tried prying and pushing but nothing seems to work. I am afraid of damaging the turbo blades if I slip so I dont want ot beat on the the thing unless that is what it takes to get something in there to pry out the snap ring. If anybody has any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks,

Doug

Ring

I did not get a chance to see your last thread so let me tell you something you may already have tried...

1a. Lay the hammer and chisel down...

1b. Grab a screwdriver...

2. There are two 45° angles on the end of the snap ring...

3. Use the screwdriver to lift up on the only angle you can grab...

4. Once it clears the seating ring GENTLY pull your way...

5. The ring should come out with very little effort...

6. Take a ride and listen to it sing your favorite song,szszszszszszwwwww.

Thanks for the rply cdixon I'll give it a try and see what happens but I think I already tried that. That ring is in there tight and were it is position is a pain to get to with a long enough screwdriver for leverage.

The silencer ring retainer has a split in it that is cut at an angle. Think of a donut laying down in front of you that has an angle cut in one side. you need to find the side that has a point TOWARDS the hole of the donut. I had to make a tool out of a 6'' small bladed screwdriver -- i ground it across the flat to form a point.

Since the split of my retainer ring was hidden with no way to see it , i had to do it by feel -- there was no way to tell which side of the split to grab , so I tried both sides untill it grabbed . Once it starts out, take a second tool and keep it coming around the circle from the point she starts from.

Remember there are two parts in front of the turbo blades -- a flattened piece of thin aluminum that is the silencer ring and the retainer ring that holds it in The retainer ring is about 1/8x1/8 steel fits in a groove in the turbo housing. Think of a piston ring that fits in the cylinder wall --not the piston and you have the idea.

I went to all this detail because my truck was not a easy removal like many are, but once I made this tool , she came right out.

If this does not work, PM me and we'll get together on the phone--Hope this helps

I had a little trouble getting mine out also. Had to use 2 screwdrivers to get it out.

One the lift up the end out of the groove and the other to work it out while going around the snap ring.

It'll come just have some patience, it's worth the effort. :D

Getting the ring out is a snap. No pun intended. The results were very dissapointing. I was hoping for a sound like the old t-590 cummins turbos of the "60" era,but got almost nothing. Whats with that? sleonard

Results vary depending on mods and the type of airfilter you use.

I found the high pitched whistle with the ring removed to be very irritating especially on a long drive and put it back in right away. That's where the danger lies is putting it back in, sometimes the used snap ring bends on removal and doesn't seat well.

Several folks have reported pulling their air hose to find a reinstalled silencer and retainer ring laying on their sides in front of the turbo blades just waiting to jump in...

Wsh that? sleonard [/QUOT Thanks Illflem Just bought truck 7,ooo miles ago, don't know too much about it. It has a K&N filter and some other mods. A friend of mine is a excellent diesel man and he is going to check it out for me. Its' a 94 and runs way too good for stock. 199,500 sleonard

FINALLY got it out. I had to take a 90deg pick and shove it under the sanp ring to force it up initially then just took a small screwdriver and worked my way around.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Doug

Sounds the best with a high-flow filter as K&N or a BHAF (that's what I've had anyways) vs. stock element.

ESPECIALLY with no muff. :D Oo.

my experience

Is similar to the others. when I pulled the SR, I could hear the whistle better than stock. Then when I popped on a BHAF, I could really hear it and actually put the ring back in for a bit. But then I pulled it back out. And finally when I put on the 5" with NO muffler---it sounded like the turbo was coming out of the engine bay to GETCHA!

So I've added a muffler and don't like it.

LET'R SING:cool:

OK, so I am trying to be helpful and it doesn't work!

Go to Search Forums, and search for "silencer ring picture". Let the search look through all forums. The first one that comes up for me is the one to click on, then scroll down to about the 10th post.
