I have an '05 3500 with a ctd. Where is the silencer ring on this model? I have the 600 engine. I have already removed the turbo silencer black plastic cylinder with the baffles inside it and the x-shaped perforated plates running lengthwise in it. I put a couple of sched 80 pvc pipe couiplings glued together though I had to shorten one of them by a approx. a couple of inches to make it work. It makes the turbo whistle louder and that's about it. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

take off the inlet tube to the turbo from the airbox and you will see it there, just remove the retainer ring and the silencer ring will fall right out... . that retainer ring can be a pain in the a** if you know what i mean.

Are you talking about the flow director white plastic fins that are like two or three inches from the turbo air inlet on the compressor spool? The rubber 90 degree elbow that clamps directly to turbo inlet?

The silencer ring is mounted in the turbo housing. One side of the snap ring is angled to get a screwdriver under and work it out. The silencer ring itself is the beveled looking spacer in front of the compressor wheel. It looks like a thick piece, but is only a thin formed piece of metal.

My 2006 has a loud whistle now. Maybe it is because my 2004. 5 was a loud truck and I did not notice the whistle.

After looking at the turbo and silencer ring, I think you may hurt the turbos performance. I think the silencer ring is to maximize the airflow to the compressor wheel. I think the turbo sounds louder is because the air is hitting the wheel at a less optimal flow.

It doesn't effect the performance of the vehicle. I am very proud to hear my diesel whistle while it plays... . :-laf

Here is my question... . If the silencer ring does make for better performance then why wouldn't they just cast the turbo inlet smooth all the way out, therefore eliminating the need for a ring all together?

I questioned that myself and then came up with mass and heat. If they added that much mass to the turbo it would hold heat that much worse. It also would add a considerable amount of weight to it. Those are pretty big voids that the ring covers up.

That's my opinion. Any others?
