Over the w/e I tried to remove the silencer ring on the turbo intake. Lets just say that it's all back together now with the ring still in place, me with skinned up hands, and anyone that was in earshot have added to their vocabulary.

As anyone may know, only one end is angled and is in the right position to pry up on. It was a no go. I tried every screw driver I had and some very small dia. center punches. It just snaps right back into place.

Is there a trick to removing the snap ring? Do I need a special tool? Could I drill small holes at each end so as to be able to use snap ring removal pliers?

Advise needed.

Thanks, M.

I wouldn't do any drilling, just hook your screwdriver under the beveled end & pry out. If I get one that fights me like yours, I'll have a second small screwdriver handy & stick it under the ring when I get the beveled end lifted, then just work the pair of them around 'till I can pull the ring out.

Snap ring removal

Mikie12, Just as LEPAGE said, I used a small flat blade screwdriver to lift 1 end up just enough to put a second flat blade driver under it. I then grabbed it with a pair of needle nose pliers and forced it out. Of course I had my intake tube removed for access and had a drop light so I could see well enough. Hope you get it out.

Use two screwdrivers

I just did this when I changed my oil and filter this weekend. Work one screwdriver under the open end of the ring and and pry up, then work the other screwdriver underneath it and slide it around until the snap ring pops out. Next oil change I will probably put it back as I cannot hear the turbo whistle... too darn quiet in my cab. ;)

That is what I had to do. Was a pain, but worth it. :D

dont get discouraged. I got mine off the 1st time in a couple of minutes. I replaced it for testing, and couldn't get it off the second time because of the position of the ring. You might remove the 8 little 8mm bolts holding the inner fenderwell on and pull it off for a better angle at it.

two screwdrivers is the only way to go. focus on getting the end of it pulled in enough to get a screwdriver behind it... once you get a driver behind it, you're home free.

Racin; come onnnn down. It would be a nice trip for you out from Jersey.

Seriously, thanks guys for the responses. I'll try it again.

I did remove the fender liner and was working over the tire. After above 10 tries (have to come out after 4 to 5 min as it was killing my back and chest) I started to marr the housing, so quit while I was ahead.

One of the posters said that removing the ring does not make that much difference. Is this true?

I also installed the "cool hose" (blue) , and it was alittle louder-but not that much.

Thanks, M.

Thanks again for the helpful comments guys; I finally gotter out today. I removed the air box to install the PSMbuick (car nut 57) cool air intake tube from the bottom. I was able to approach from the top this time with the air box out, and was able to work the screw drivers under the ring and work it around and out just like you said.

Hey that cool air tube really works. Even at idle, you can feel a strong draw at the bottom of the tube. Hard to believe especially with the stock intake hole drawing to.

And also-alot more turbo sound now, like a diesel is supposed to sound like.

Have a happy new year. M.

Do you pry out where the gap is or do you try to work the ring around from the outside. I tried multiple different ways with no luck. Can anyone post pictures with where to properly start prying from???Also does the screw drive have to be small enough to fit in the gap??

I used an o-ring tool, looks like an awl with the tip bent, slipped it in between twisted the handle and out it popped, took less than 15 seconds.
