can someone please explain these number to me. just had a oil sample sent in for the heck of it. it was rotella 15w40 with 6500 miles on it. my truck has only 9000 miles. changed at 2500 then took this sample at 9000. the silicon seems high and what about the potassium. is that a coolant leak?

should i not worry about this, or install the stock air box? is anybody else getting oil samples with these numbers?

i used an amsoil filter in my 01 and never got a sample back with over 5 parts silicon. that was with 10,000 samples.

Kurt, disconnect your hose to your turbo and wipe the insides with your finger to see if you get any sign of dust particles getting past the filter. When I had a bad K&N I was able to do that. If there was enough dust to kick your Silicon up to 26 then you'd definitely find quite a bit of dust inside your intake hose (speaking from experience!).

Also note new engines typically have elevated silicon for the first 1-2 oil changes. Your wear metals are a bit higher than you usually see but nothing to worry about. If they don't drop on your next sample then there would be cause for investigation.

How many miles on your truck? Is it the new AFE 7, model air induction system you are running?

vaughn-

i checked the entire hose and turbo. no dirt or dust. i guess that makes me feel a little better. but if it was dirty i think the levels would be more like 500-1000 parts to the million of silicon.

the potassium level of 98=coolant leak of some sort. i have never added any coolant and my reservoir tank is only 1 inch below the max line. it could have been like that from the start, never checked it.

i am installing the stock air box, running it for 3000, and sending other sample.

thanks everybody for all the help

Kurt, when I had my POC K&N cone-shaped RE-0880 on my 2001 Ram it let in so much dust I could wipe a bunch with my finger.

I was so foolish to redo the seal thinking it wasn't adequate to only find out a few thousand miles later it was going straight through the media.

Even with a nice coating of dust on my intake hose, guess what my silicon reading was after 10,000 miles? A piddly 14 ppm

When I put a K&N on my 98. 5 the silicon levels went up, the K&N went to the trash and the silicon levels went down. I am tempted to try the AFe set-up, but I fear the same problem. I am going to wait a while and see if there are problems with the AFe.

Guys this is very simple and has been mentioned above. Silicon levels are abnormally high during engine break in. This is a fact. Kurt, don't worry at all, your engine is doing fine. Not sure where you got your oil analysis kit but next time get it from somewhere that tests TBN and soot as well, they are important. Overall, you shouldn't have tested so soon. Oil tests done during the break-in period are not really relevant as wear metals and other levels will be off.

Bottom line - your air filter is fine, keep on truckin!
