Silly question re breakaway

Where do you folks anchor your breakaway cable for goosenecks and 5vrs?



Mine's a gooseneck and it strikes me if the chains hold but the rings fail, the cable could leave with the chains. It wouldn't be a big deal to put another anchor in the bed for the breakaway, but I was wondering what others may have done.

For the 5th wheel hitch, there's a safety pin that keeps the mechanism from releasing. It passes thru 2 separated metal pieces, so I put the loop in there before "pinning".

My truck is a short wheelbase with a tool box. I put a eyebolt on the box and hook the breakaway cable to it.

I put mine on one of the bed hooks at the back.



My reasoning:





If it comes off the hitch, I don't want the brakes activating until it has cleared the truck. If I can stop it while the gooseneck is still in the bed and with safety chains still attached, it seems like it would be safer for all, but if it activates before the safety chains are broke, it will lock up and make things even worse.

I hook mine to the 5er hitch. If the hitch comes off the truck, I can't see the the brakeaway cable dragging a 180 lb hitch down the road.

I hook mine. to one of the factory tiedowns at the back of the bed

Ditto on the connecting to the hitch. Have the Signature Series Reese GN and connect it to the swing out arm lock. If it can pull that beast out of the bed and not pull the plug, then I need some of that for my safety chains.

I like the idea of hooking it to one of the rear cleats. I figure any activation of the breakaway will make for a lot of drama, a real mess, and a good war story if I survive it. The thought of a locked up trailer (I've always been pretty impressed when I test my breakaways with just how tight a brake will hold with the whole 12 volts put to it. ) with the GN hung up in a corner of the bed somehow seems to offer fewer opportunities for salvation than trying to stop things relatively together. I hope never to need it, but I can't imagine any pretty scenario with an activated breakaway. Anybody seen my tailgate?
