Mr. Bob's Silicone Hoses installed

3rd Gen Twins

i'm stuck between these two set ups. my truck hardly ever tows ,maybe once or twice a year. looking for 500+hp w/o drugs. i was gun hoe for the twins but have driven a few single trucks that have made me think twice.

my set up so far is

01 24v A/T

180 hp injectors

juice w/attitude unlocked+un taped for now

fass system

air raid intake

sun coast converter, valve body and hp rebuild kit(going in this week end)

hx35 :{

head studs and o-rings are next on the list,just waiting on the sale of my other toy :{

The reason i went with BD twins is its a compleat system from air filter to down pipe. I know their not the big power twins but i want this truck to be a reliable daily driver, i wrench all day and would like to go home after work ;)

the only other dealings i have had with twins is a older set of non wastegated twins. truck rips when it stays together but it see's more bay time then road. not what im looking for.

now on the other hand II silver bullet can handle what a set of twins can, but how is lag on this w/o drugs to spool it. for you guys with this turbo is it a daily drivable turbo? i know it's not gunna spool like twins but i dont want to build a truck with a 1000 rpm's of power.

Thanks for any info

Tim

Comparing the two and you saying daily driver I'd say BD twins are your only option!! I know some who have had 66 size turbos and they hated the lag!! BD's twins are always spooled and ready for action.

I like my single over Twins but that may just be me. I've ran Twins since 02' and still like a single over them. I could show you a very mean 45 lbs of boost at work with a ride.

Had a nice discussion with some people at a dyno event this last weekend. Guys that had tried running large singles. Just depends on how you drive and what you do with your truck. Running through the steep mountains of Oklahoma with 800hp worth of fuel the singles seem to work great.

I must have missed those when I was out there! :-laf

By the way, I am getting an SPS66 for my truck, it is not my daily driver these days but I still want to be able to drive it when I want on the road, if you can wait I'll let you know how it does. I want to stay with a single and I want to be able to put in big injectors, hopefully the turbo isn't too big.

Tim,

500+ Hp would put you in the SPS 62 range turbo which drives very nice..... If you want to step it up look into the SPS64. The 66mm turbos are really for max HP guys. You will get a much more streetable turbo with the 62 or 64 turbos. The SPS64 will produce between 550-600 HP.

I guess My truck must be odd. I tried my SPS62 as a single a couple of weeks ago. I left my fueling the same as my small twins(500ish hp). Spooling was good, but the heat was there big time. Around 300 deg more when climbing hills. I guess I'm just not used to seeing the pyro up at the 1200 mark and climbing during normal driving. Out on flat ground or in town it is fine. It would be great to max out at 45psi of boost. But I hate the thought of spending 1800 each trying a 64, then a 66, and ending up back with a 62 and twins.

Alright Ron quit picking on me :)

I'll have to agree with Doug here but I'm a little bias as I really like the single.

I have an sps66 and with stock injectors and TST it is very laggy. However a set of sticks and some pressure made a huge difference. I don't tow, so I can't comment there.

RMalone, you should try a SMARTY!!! I ran just my TST on the economy setting, but hated the lower end lag. SMARTY on #1 and TST on the 2/1 regular program not the economy setting I found is the best driveablity I've had yet! I still get 19 MPG normal driving, No hot rodding. I have nice smooth power and awesome spool.

you can see what i run in my sig... . it gets hot quick.

thats what im tring to stay away from. but what is "hot" to you?

i've driven a truck with the sps62 and i liked it but it did get hot @1500

some what of the same mods as my truck but a 150hp injector.

Heck I have seen a good set of twins hit 1500* with a set of mach 6's..... There is no magic turbo or turbos out there. We all want the same thing spoolup of an HY9 with the cooling and power of say maddogs setup. Best we can do is find the compromise that fits our wants and needs best.

i am not even going to say how hot mine will get in about 3-4 seconds on a wot run, i cant even play with it. i do like a single for what it is, but i am going to try something else with more air. just like a single you got to match your twin combo with the fuel you have, 2 little fuel with a single and it is laggy, 2 much fuel and it gets HOT, kind of the same deal with twins o vise versa.

Not picking on you Jim. I just can't resist a chance to remind people that certain setups work better in the flat lands than in the hills. It's a bit hilly here and it's been helpfull (egt wise) having the twins. Been interesting reading about your single experiment. Sounds like your having alot of fun. I asked my dad if it's flat in Oakrahoma. He said there are two kinds of hills there. One kind has a prairie dog on top, the other was once a cow and has a buzzard on top, You can see 100 miles from the top of either.

Ok, that just made the line of the week..... LMAO! Love that Oakrahoma statement! Yea it's not too hilly here but there are some rolling hills in places, other places it's pancake flat. BOTW, I'm on at 600+ on fuel, the other is N2O!

Odd that you jumped the EGT's you did going to a single, I only jumped 100-150 when I dropped off the B/B. Wish you could drive my truck, or watch me drive it! Not too bad one the bottom and lays some decent smack down on the top... ... . stupid one the bottle!

BOTW, did you know JetPilots folks live 1. 5 hours away from me! You need to watch Doug barefoot at 50 mph... ..... bigger than mine!

Jim

I would have to say i like my sps66 also. My egt vary on how i drive. With whats in my sig i only saw 1300 on the dyno. On a flat road playin around they get around 1600 and settle down to 13-1400 wot. When ive done a burn out contest tst's little box said STOP. The box only reads to 1750 before it blanks out.

I live in southeast IN its got the hills and hollars, nothing like the mountains of cali though.

Its going to depend on where and how you are going to drive it. Altitude killed me when i went to new mexico this year. It was like a light switch when i hit dallas. I live at about 400 ft sea level and went to about 4500 ft. That was turbo lag and MAJOR smoke. My crusin temps went from around 7-800to 880-1000 @ 80 mph. I was runing a set of 150 hp inj. for this time.

I even have a set of 100 hp inj that only run about 100* cooler than my 220's and smoke just as bad.

i can hit 1600 in about 4-5 sec. with everything on kill

Keep in mind that he is looking for a 500hp truck, not 600 or 700. For what it's worth, I drove home from a dyno event saturday. With everything the same as when I dyno'd, I could run the steepest hills at 65-70mph and stay under 800 degrees. On the very steepest hill I slowed down to 50 and rolled into it slowly. It got to 700 before it started to spool up. At 20 psi it leveled off at 800. At 30psi it went to 850. At 40 psi it went to 875. At 50 psi I hit 925. I floored it for 3 seconds and hit 65 psi and 1100 deg. End of hill, 94mph. I dyno'd at 490hp. Twins are very nice for this sort of thing. Elevation was just a bit over 1000 ft.

I don't know about being bigger..... Jim you can ride one mean tube!

An interesting point is the highest point in OK is Black Mesa @ 4973. So its not quite as flat as some would believe.
