Maybe I'm being paranoid. Maybe not.

I never listened to shutdown of engine before with stock turbo so I have nothing to compare this to. I happened to open the hood while my timer kept the truck running. Well I was near the air filter listening to it sucking in air and then the truck shut itself down. I can hear the turbo still spinning and I'm hearing a slight metallic sound. A metallic tinging or scraping... almost sounds like gear mesh. And it slows down, then stops when, I'm assuming, the turbo has stopped spinning, maybe 15 seconds or so. This happened yesterday so I checked it out again today and same thing. My neighbors must think I'm insane standing there with my ear close to the air filter listening intently...

Is this normal??? Another thing I don't need to be worrying about.

Do this:

Remove intake hose, check turbo for in/out shaft play by gently pushing in and out on the shaft. If there is any noticeable shaft play in/out over say . 002" then you probably need a new thrust bearing (ie rebuild).

Next step:

Check side to side play on the shaft by gently pushing side to side the turbos shaft (like wiggling it).

There should be from . 005" to . 020" of play...

Do not force the shaft! Remember gently... If the compressor wheel touches the housing with little effort you definitely need a rebuild.

Also check for signs of noticeable WEAR on the inside of the compressor housing or on the outside diameter of the compressor wheel.

Let me know what you find out. It could just be that your turbine wheel is kind of off center (when manufactured) causing a slight contact when oil pressure absent... which is nothing to worry about. Or it can just be the turbo's wheels touching also due from lack of oil pressure while the engine is not running.

Aftermarket chargers often have custom machined housings that are built to tighter tolerances and sometimes you will notice some "ringin" "tinging" when oil pressure is absent and the charger is slowing down to a stop.

Mine is making a new noise only occasionally, definite change in tone and volume, is a rebuild something your average joe can do?

TIA, Tom

I pulled intake off. Everything looks clean. No debris anywhere. Front to back play is NOTHING. Up and down, side to side is very minimal, maybe 1/32"... maybe... it's so small it's hard to tell. I listened again intently and it sounds more like "sht, sht, sh-sh-shtt" then it stops as I believe the turbo has stopped. I'm going to try to post a few pics...
