I recently replace a clutch for a guy in a 98 12 valve. The install went fine and all works well but now he tells me about 10 seconds after startup after all the idiot lights go out he gets a single chime. No check engine light or anything, just a chime. Any ideas? All I unhooked was the necessary stuff, backup lights, vacuum lines on T-case, etc. Is threre a way to search codes on these older trucks? Any help appreciated.

Man, I don't know about that one. You said it's runing fine otherwise. I would just leave it alone and not worry about it if there are no other issues. The dealer would be the best place to go to find out that issue, IMO. They deal with idiots all day that bring in stupid little petty things like "I don't hear as many chimes as I used to since this happened. "

Not calling you an idiot, BTW. :)

Well thanks, I appreciate that. :p

I told him I would warrantee it until it left my driveway and I guess that's up at this point. Perhaps out of the kindness of my heart I should extend the warrantee and offer to disconnect that chime :D

That is... ... Unless any of you other fellas have some good ideas???

Could it be the oil pressure gauge... . if the pressure doesn't come up quick enough on the gauge it could chime once and then when pressure has risen sufficiantly no chimes follow... . for that matter any of the other gauges will provide a chime if they do not respond into a normal range quick enough.

It could be I suppose. If so then it's just coincidental that it started happening after the clutch install? This dang 03 of mine must have two dozen reasons it will chime like that, door adjar, low fuel, cargo light, seat belt, any of the gauges..... you get the idea. Is there a way to scan for codes on a 98 12valve without a scan tool? Do they even store codes?

My vote is for the oil pressure not being up to par right after startup... my '98 does this as well. No worries.

As for the codes... you can do the ignition switch trick on a '98 12-valve. Turn it on/off/on/off/on and look at the digital speedo for codes. I doubt you'll see any codes in there...

You can check the gauge cluster on the '98+ trucks by holding down the trip odometer 'twig' while you turn the key on... it goes through a little self check routine. Chicks dig it. :-laf

Washer Fluid

I had this happen on my 98. 5 a few months back. It did it for like 3 days, I checked EVERYTHING, and nothing seemed to be wrong with it. On the 4th day, the washer fluid light came on. I stopped at Advanced Auto, picked up some Washer Fluid, added it, and have never heard the chime on startup again. I had the same symptoms, no lights, just chime, and then everything was back to normal. Just an idea.

Thanks for the ideas. I tried cycling the key and it showed no codes. I figgured the procedure must be diffrent on the older ones. I'll check you're other idea next time I see him.
