Just got me a new Sirius system and was wondering where the best location for the antenna is, both for looks and function. I hate to install it on the roof running the wire through the brake light if it will work somewhere else as good and look better. I had it on the dash for a bit but it didn't work as well as I thought it should. This is going on an old 96 without all the factory preinstalled options.

Thanks for the help

Blair

Really the only place to mount it is on the roof. It gives it the best view of the satellites without obstruction, and gives it a plane (the roof) to receive a reflected signal.

I put mine...........

I wrapped mine in bubble wrap and shoved it deep inside the dash. Every once in a while the signel will break, but not very often. I am in San Jose almost daily and it works great there.

Try it under your dash too see what kind of reception you can recieve, if thats not working try on the dash... ... ... ... ...

I mounted mine on the hood, close to the windshield wipers/vent area. Sitting in the truck it's just below my sight on the rear lip off the hood. That's also where my GPS antenna is located.

Heres a pic(not a good one) but you can see two small black boxs on the back edge of the hood. The one in the middle is my Sat radio and the one on the drivers side is the GPS ant. They are both magnetic mount and have been there for a year or so,rain, snow pressure washer, no problems at all. I will try to find a better pic.

EDIT I just went out to the shed and snapped these. Hope this helps you.

Thats cool..........

Adam, pure genius on mounting on the hood. I would have never thought of that, and I am almost smart enough to come out of the rain!

No pic but I gave mine mounted on corner of roof just above driver door. Wire runs down behind weather stripping in front of driver door. This way when my slide in camper is on truck I just pull the from under weather stripping and mount it to end of hood for reception. I did not like it on hood where prying eyes can see it...

Thanks for the input guys. I have been moving it around and so far the only place it doesn't drop the signal is on the roof where they tell you to put it.

I have a sliding rear window, I mounted mine on the roof brought the wire througt the window and up behind the headliner to the front of the truck.

Makes removal easy if needed & reception is excellent with it on the roof.

I mounted mine on the dash, out of the way of the wiper, with double back tape. It does great.

Roof mount

I mounted mine on the rooftop near the third brake light. I pulled the third brake light apart and drilled a hole through the back into the cab and sealed the wire with RTV. I filed a small slot in the light frame so the antenna wire doesn't pinch and used a drop of RTV to seal it. Inside, the wire runs down behind the headliner and under the rocker panel cover, then under the dash. It sounds worse than it is!

Yep I think that is the plan for mine as well. I got everything installed in my 81 toyota diesel and I ended up putting it on the front part of the cab then routing the wire through and around the front windshield seal out the bottom and in the cab. Seems to be working great so far. I think I have more in the stereo system than the truck is worth but it is a diesel so it is worth it to me.
