The book "The Tipping Point" by Malcom Gladwell gives a pretty good explanation of the six degrees of freedom. To tell you the truth, I think this is true.
Scary isn't it.
BTW, if you want to know who originated this idea, it was a psychologist named Stanley Milgram in the late 1960's. The case experiment was to study and determine an answer to the problem known as the "Small-World Problem". This problem has also been studied by the University of Utah, along with many others.
It has even spawned a spin-off game, "The Six-Degrees of Kevin Bacon".
The game is to connect Kevin Bacon to any other Hollywood Actor in less than 6 movies.
Another scary thought, I read about a computer scientist at The University of Virginia who wrote a computer program to calculate the Kevin Bacon problem.
For approximately 250,000 actors, Kevin Bacon was only around 2. 83 movies away from them.
In the scope of best connected actors in Hollywood, Kevin Bacon landed at #669. The best connected actor is Rod Steiger at around 2. 63 steps away from all other actors.
Some of these numbers might be a little off, I read the book while ago, but I am pretty sure with them.
My advice, check it out.
