I have a 2003 with a six speed. I have about 8500 miles on it and it has started to grind when you put it into reverse. It never has done this before until the other day. So I took it in to the dealer and they said that it is perfectly normal with the six speed. If it is normal why hasn't it ever done it before. My dad has a 2001 and his has never done this. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem and if you know what the problem could be if there is one.

Sounds to me like your clutch may be dragging when you have it dis-engaged. The reverse gear does't have synchros so if the input shaft is spinning when you try to shift into reverse, you will get some grinding. I have an auto so I am not familiar with clutch linkage to know if it is adjustable. If it is hydraulic, check to see if you are not low on hydraulic fluid for the clutch master cylinder.

what I have learned with the 6 speed is that you have to bury the pedal all the way to the floor before attempting to get into gear... I have tried to ½ @ss it, but no sir... picky picky!!!! scoot the seat up just a hair, and see if that helps... . mine grinds, but in 2nd...

I'm not a transmission guy, but my old 5 speed gm had the same problem. So I learned to put it in 5th gear first, evidentally to stop the transmission from spinning, then it would slip right into reverse without any grindage. You might try this a few times to see if it helps.

I've driven a ton of sticks and I always set the transmission in second then goto reverse. One of my older trucks this had to be done and well it became habit. My 02 6spd can be a pain but i always set it in second then goto reverse with no problems.

My theory is that, when new, the transmission is really tight and when you have the clutch pushed in the input shaft on the transmission doesn't turn much... if any at all. As it breaks in, it turns much easier. So, even though you have the clutch pushed in, the input shaft is gonna spin. It doesn't necessarily mean the clutch is dragging. By putting the transmission into a synchro'd gear first, it stops the the spin, thus letting you pop it in reverse without grinding.

My '01 has never been a problem to get into reverse, but my buddy that has the identical truck will grind. All the gears in the six speed are synchronized, including reverse. His WAS working fine until he tried to shift into 7th gear:eek:  . I have heard of others having problems like you're describing. I've tried putting mine in gear while rolling to see how it worked. It wouldn't go into reverse until I was stopped, but it didn't grind either. There may be a problem with the reverse synchronizer.
