I bought the transfer case and fuel tank skid plates from the Dodge dealer.

Not very expensive. The transfer case bolts right on with crossbrace, but I had the dealer do the fuel tank because they had to drill a couple of holes for the extra crossbrace.

Holes where? In the frame? I ask because I've been considering putting a couple small holes in my frame and was concerned about weakening it.

You guys could always make your own skid plates out of some 1/8" steel plate. Might not look as "good" as the factory ones...

Does anyone has the part number for the '05 (short bed quad cab) fuel tank skid plate?

I ordered the protection group on my '05 but it came without the fuel tank skid plate. I've read the other threads about the fuel tank plate not being available, but my question is, when will it be available? I went to the dealer yeasterday and they could not find a part number to order the skid plate for an '05 model.

Thanks,

Ben

Skid Plates for Fuel Tank

I was disgusted that the "off road" package didn't come with a fuel tank skid plate. I bought my 4. 5 before the Power Wagon was announced, so I didn't know there would be a factory plate. I had one custom made by Fly-n-Hi here in Phoenix. It cost about $600 installed. It attaches to the rear of the transfer case skid plate and hangs from the frame. The sides are bent upwards so it wont catch on anything. It isn't strong enough for a jack point, but it should slide over the pointy granite we have around here.

If you are worried about fuel tank protection, take a look under the front at the protection for all the coolers. It is really a shame that an "off road" truck is so exposed to front end damage, especially with that awful approach angle. I don't like the look, weight or cost of the bull bar bumpers. As an alternative, I installed a front receiver hitch from Hidden Hitch. These are less than $100, but not much fun to install. It provides protection for the bottom of all those coolers as well as a hitch or winch mounting point. The only problem is that Hidden Hitch designed the receiver portion to protrude below the plastic air dam. :{ This made an already awful approach angle even worse. To deal with this, I had Fly-n-Hi modify the hitch by moving the receiver portion from below the support cross member to the top. It now protrudes through the air dam and provides solid protection for the coolers. It looks cool with a RAM hitch plug. I was charged $150 for this modification. If you are handy with a welder, you could do this yourself. If anyone is interested, I will post pictures.

How much for the parts and install if you dont mind? I dont exactly like driving out into a field to hook up to a trailer or wagon of hay knowing that my underbelly isnt prortcted ya know?

Thanks!

White Sheep,

Please post some pictures... a front receiver mount is handy for maneauvering trailers in tight places anyway, protecting the coolers would be a huge plus.

Thank you,

Mickey

My 04 had the snow plow prep and had the skidplate. Took it off before I traded it off on my 04. 5. Bolted right up to the existing holes that were already in the frame. i also used the factory bolts from the 04. :-laf :-laf .

It sits rather close to the cat converter but dosn't hit. I like it being there as it wasnt included on my 04. 5 :D

I made my own skid plate for behind the bumper. I was always worried about the cooler lines and intercooler sticking out when off-roading. I used 3/16" T1 plate so it is stiff as heck and so hard I had to burn out the mounting holes. :--) It will easily support the weight of the truck.
