I was planning to put synthetic oil in my truck at around the 11,000 mile mark. I assumed that Castroil Syntech oil could be used in the Cummins engine, but after reading the label on it and all the other SYNTHETIC OILs IN THE local aUTO zONE, NONE ARE RATED FOR DIESELD (SORRY about that caps key... )I was thinking about sticking with Rotella and adding some Slick 50. Was wondering if Slick 50 is okay to use in diesles? Does it help out your engine a bit, or does it do some harm to a diesel? I read about a man with a turbo charged SAAB who claims Slick 50 destroyed his engine, and that Slick 50 ruins turbo charged engines, but that has been the only bad thing I've read about it. Any advice will be appreciated. I also wonder how the Slick 50 might affect the oil filter and if someone did run synthetic oil is there a special type of filter that should be used with it?

The local Autozone by me carries Mobil Delvac which IS full synthetic (Syntec no)and is rated for diesels. My dad swears by Slick 50. He has used it in the last three vehicles he has had and they have all gone alot farther than they should have. His 95 12valve has over 150k total and 100k on it with Rotella and Slick 50 in the sump.

I have used Slick 50 on some past vehicles, but am not comfortable putting it in my Dodge. I got to that conclusion this way:
1) Honda Civic, 390,000 on Mobil 1 WITHOUT Slick 50
2) Cummins, everybody says 300k to 1,000k with a wide variety of diesel-rated oils, WITHOUT Slick 50
3) What does Slick 50 do to the turbo on a hot shutdown? Any chance it could "gum up" the bearings? (I honestly don't know. )

Putting 1, 2, and 3 together - no Slick 50 for me! If you can't find the oil of your choice locally, go mail order. It seems strange at first, but, the lack of sales tax offsets the shipping cost, and it's kind of nice having what you need just show up on your doorstep instead of having to drive all over town trying to find it.

There was a post on these forums some time ago about Slick50 and other snake oils. The conclusion was STAY away from them unless you want trouble! At the very least, it will mess up the additive package that is included with your oil.

Keep your air filter clean, if you use paper. If K&N, do not over oil and check the gasket for leakage, change your oil often depending on how you use (abuse) your eng. (Can't go wrong by too many changes).

Don't waist your time adding something your going to worry about.

I added slick 50 to a Ford 302 around 2500 miles, guess it was too soon as it consumed oil from that point on.

When is a Cummins broken in anyway?

Life is too short. Esp. since we take better care of these trucks than we do ourselves. (I do anyway).

Opps I think a New Years resolution just slipped #ad

My only experience with Slick 50 was on 65 HP tractor, two weeks after using it the engine dynoed at 28 HP and had to be rebuilt. If you want to use it I have several cans you can have for FREE!

Stay away from Slick 50.

I had a friend who tried it in his oval track race car. It was the only time, so far, that he blew up an engine. Yes I know it is totally different conditions than our trucks are subject to, but still it has to tell you something.

I know some of you swear it is the greatest thing, but in my opinion it is junk.

Bigfig! PLEASE! don`t use this Jello-50 I have seen the inside of to many engines that have used this stuff along with the other names of the other addditives that do absolutley nothing but CLOG-UP your oil passages. Upon inspection of a engine ready to be hot tanked it looked like your wife used the lifter valley for a jello mold! It is Unbeleivable! Please! again don`t use this C---. !

The only thing slick in Slick 50 is the way it lines the pockets of the manufacturer with green #ad

Consumer Reports did a study of Slick 50, Prolong, or one of those other additives. It was the one that was shown in the commercial where they ran the engine without oil in a laboratory.
CR ran 6 Chevy 4. 3 v6s and added the stuff to three engines. The three engines were run in accordance with the additive's directions. The other three engines were run normally/properly. The oil was then drained from the three engines that received the additive and the engines were started. This was to simulate the commercial. All three seized in about 30 seconds.
There is no magic to these additives.
However, I still am a firm believer in the FM principle.

I'm with Cooker, they're junk! If they were any good at all, why wouldn't one of the big synthetic (or even mineral) oil manufactures include it as level up option in their oil? Because they know its junk. Why doesn't one of the big oil producers have their own "Slick 50?" Because its junk.

If you do regular oil changes, 7,500 miles or more frequent, IMHO you don't even need synthetic. Sythetic is marginally better, but that margin increases as the time between oil changes increases.

Conclusion: Leave that junk out, and just change your oil frequently, use sythetic if you want to.

Another opinion. I probably would not put any snake oil in the Cummins. Having said that, I put Slick 50 in my Grand Am in 1989 at about 10K and again when I reached 50K. My reasoning was that "if" it didn't hurt anything, the worse I would be out would be an expensive quart of oil, and at best it might help the engine achieve a lot of miles. The research was not as readily available back then (Had Al invented the net in 89?) and the often cited CR report was much later. Knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't do the treatment in even a gasser, let alone a diesel. Hopefully I did not goober up the oil passages in my zeal to make it go longer. The Grand Am now has 208K and runs strong, although it does use a quart of 10-30 about every 800-1000 miles. Maybe it was just the regular diet of Havoline 10-30 with 3K changes that got me this far, who knows.

I had one student think that if slick 50 was good then the fram filter with teflon in it and an additional quart of slick 50 would do wonders. This was a 383 chev (350 w/ 400 crank) in less than 1000 mile it developed a rod knock. Upon tear down all the bearings looked like the old copper bearings. All the babbet(sp) had washed right off the bearing.
