Slid out drive choice?

I have never owned a trailer with a slid out yet, but will be in the market for one soon. My question for you is what is the best system and why? And which system is more trouble free that the others offered?

I have a SunnyBrook Travel Trailer with a slide out. I have had no trouble with it. This is the first slide out that I have owned.

I believe all models are good

We've had 5th wheels with slideouts since 1996. All have been electrically-driven mechanical (i. e. , gear-driven) designs, and we've not had any problems whatsoever with any of them. Having said that, the modern electrically-powered hydraulic slideouts seem to be pretty well sorted out as well.



The type of slideout drive mechanism won't be the "make or break" decision when the time comes to purchase our next 5ver.

I'm sure both types(Elec. and Hyd. ) do the job. With an electric the motor can fail.

With the hydraulic, the electric pump motor, and the pump can fail,plus the hyraulic system can leak.

Thanks for the info guys, I kinda thought that they were about equal in reliability because I haven't seen any complaints on them except for sticking points in relays.

I have a rack and pinion type slide drive and it works well. What ever you get, as soon as you get it home get into the access and tighten all the mounting bolts. Mine get loose every once in awhile and came from the factory just finger tight.

I think I remember seeing one of the hydraulic systems that had to run the full sequence out before it would start the sequence in. You had to put all the slides out before the first slide would start back in.



There are times I only want one slide out and then put that one back in.



I chose electric rack & pinion.



Last 5er had a screw driven drive that failed during my tenure (1 1/2 years). Almost did not get it hand cranked back in, bad worm gear. Extended warrantee covered it.



Yep, constantly check & tighten everything.

They seem to all work well, I personally like them to have an awning covering them. A slide out sure makes for alot more room.

I have a friend with a hyd. slide if it is cold out the slide will move very slow, some times not at all.

Had not thought of the temperature as a hydraulic factor. I try to not RV where I need the heater



On my Alfa the underbelly is heated and the temp may not be a factor unless it get really cold, less than 30*
