Truck Camper and 2500 '05???

I'm trying to get a handle on how heavy of a camper I can haul. My 2001 Quad cab with fuel, my wife, and dogs weighs 7300 pounds. With a 100 pound tongue weight for my boat and 200 pound of gear for camping (minimum). The total weight of 7600 pounds subtracted from GVWR of 8800 pounds only leaves room for a 1200 pound camper! Is this the proper way to figure this?

Yep. Also need to calculate axle weight and consider GAWR and max tire load.

As you can tell many run overweight. :D

Sorry, can't resist..... Tounge firmly in cheek... .

Doesn't 60 pounds of helium weigh the same as 60 pounds of hydrogen?

60 PSI not 60 pounds

it is pressure not weight

and hydrogen or helium would not really matter there weights are almost equal one just has a little more "pop" when a tire blows. :-laf

If we can get by the helium & hydrogen.

My rig is a 99 with camper package, sway bars front & rear. I have been using a 11ft. Shadow Cruiser for years, making many 5k plus trips. On many of the trips we also pull our 18ft. boat along. The camper is light only 2240lb. wet weight. The truck has helper springs on it. NO problems with the unit at this point. As a matter of fact, we are planning on going to the SW this winter ( minus boat) that will likley be in the neighberhood of 6k mi.

Don't sweat it.

I used to haul a 11 1/2 foot Coachmen camper on my '92 1 ton dully, also had air bags. Never had any issues. Just drive at normal speed slow down in wind, all normal driving smarts. As said above I agree with all.

Helium.

I had a Lance 921 slide out and sold it. I couldn't stand the pucker factor driving around at safe speeds on any unpaved fire road.

I pulled the airbags for more travel in the rear end. Airbags limit the travel to about 5".

My Bigfoot 3000 is a little over 4000-lbs. when loaded. The truck handles it just fine and I drive careful.

Is your truck a DRW or a SRW. With that much weight I hope it's a Dually.

In same situation 2500 2 wd with 8800 Gross

Take a look at the Bigfoot 15C8. 2 only 1640 lbs dry.

after that try pop ups.

be careful about going over gross. your vehilcle warranty AND your insurance

will be void. Insurance is the big thing. If you ever get in a serious accident,

you could lose everything.

Likewise! How do you like the Luverne SS Running Boards? I've never got around to installing Running Boards (wife's orders) as I might have interference issues with my Tork-Lift camper tie-downs.

I researched running boards and came up with Luverne and Putco. Putco were nicer, but way too spendy. I really like the Luvernes SS. The Box Boards (bed) for dually, were much more difficult to install then the cab boards. I have the Happi-Jack (sp) tie-downs, which do not interfere with the boards. I don't know what the Tork-Lift look like.

I'll have to look into the Luverne running boards but most places do not carry them in stock so that I can't do a 'check-fit'. The Tork-Lifts (lots of discussions here) are frame mounted camper tie-downs which hold a big load very securly (Bigfoot cautions against using bed mounts because of the weight and the stiffness of its construction) but could also cause interference issues with any type of running board. Thanks for the info and happy trails.
