When trying to hold a constant speed on level ground, i get a slight surging effect, seems to be worse at 30-50 mph. I have good smooth throttle response when i put my foot in it a little, but at a steady speed its like it can't figure out how much throttle i'm giving it. Has been doing this for probably 10K miles, never seems any worse or any better, just a bit of an annoyance.

I've heard talk about a throttle position sensor, or APPS but im not very familiar with either. Could one of these be my problem?

More than likely your dealing with the torque converter lock/unlock issue that so many of us have dealt with. First thing to do is clean your battery terminals. Even if they look clean, clean them. Use a wire brush type battery terminal cleaner. Do a search for tc lock/unlock and you will find a list (literally) of things to try.

The Throttle Position Sensor & APPS is the same thing. Changing that should be a last resort considering the cost. APPS failing is usually accompanied by a "Dead Pedal" symtom.

Not this time, see his sig, it's a stick. In cooler weather, I also have a little bit of a surge as the op descibed. Seems to go away once everything is up to temps.

yes it is a standard trans, so thats not the problem. The problem seems to be the same regardless of temp. I don't have a dead pedal at all, good throttle response.

i am wondering about this also, i have an that had a similar problem. i sent off my quadzilla to have it worked on and that seems to have fixed it (fingers crossed). mine is not the T/C either because it did it with the lock up switch. i also had my injectors tested and they were all good... .

Wear on the VP44 is the usual culprit. The surge is a pain cuz its almost impossible to track it back to the IP without just replacing it.

Replacing the APPS with a new one is a cheaper alternative if you haven't done so, plus, getting the injectors balanced and tested. Sometimes the IP wear is enhanced by wear on other items and vice versa.

HMMMM... ... .

No flaming here, please as I'm so feed up with my engine surging.
I have the following all new:
ECM unit
VP-44
FASS DDRP.
Two new APPS from Timbo. $165. 00 each is not cheap.
NO CODES>>>

And I still have surging. I'm so at the end of my rope with this. I better stop here before I say bad words.

Where did the VP44 come from? It is entirely possible to get substandard electronics on a rebuilt pump. Unless you specifically have gotten a pump with new electronics and ALL the latest pertinent updates the pump could still be the issue.

Have you had the injectors pop tested and flow balanced? One injector out of balance and\or flow has been found to cause problems that mimic APPS and pump issues.

Do you have an auto or manual trans? The "surge" may not be the engine at all but actually be the TC partially unlocking.

We have one that is intermittently in very specific random circumstances doing this very thing. Can not verify it is pump or trans. No codes and not easily replicated. Parts swapping time. :)

oops, I failed to list the injectors I replaced also with RV-275's
5-speed and 1980,000 mileage.
Truck still looks very good I'm told often. Well taken care of.

Clean all grounds

I had the same problem with my 02 6 speed, I frist changed a lot of expencive parts ( no Help ) then cleaned all the grounds and added a ground leg to the APPS ground wire and its ok now.

I must add the little bit of surging I get is minor and I am not even worrying/chasing it. Curiously, I pulled my DD box off a few days ago to get smogged and haven't put it back on since it so friggin' hot here and I haven't felt any of the surging at all. Hmmmm... .
