I have a "clunk" in the drivetrain of my '99 4x4 short bed when shifting in and out of gear or letting off the gas. Transmission is a newly rebuilt DTT. Rear end is recently inspected with little or no wear. We even replaced a couple of bearings just in case. U-joints are tight. Don't know what else to check. Could it be the transfer case? How would I check? Truck is at 108,000 miles.

set the rear end up on jack stands and start by putting the trans. in park , go to the wheels and rotate fwd and back to see if you can make the noise that you'er hearing , if so that the problum is from the parking paw to r. wheels, have a 2nd person rotate the wheel to help find the spot , then take off the dust cover from bellhousing and rook that back and forth [ parking paw forword] , if that does not duplicate the sound then do the above with wheels on the ground with the power of eng. that will check mounts , if more help is needed to pinpoint then goto parts/tool place and look for a stethascope that has the needle on the end that you touch to the suspected part and you should be able to find it .

Greg, didn't that only do it in 2WD? Not 4WD. So all of that slop we saw in your driveline, wasn't in the rear-end? Ralph didn't see anything suspicious?
