In the morning the truck cranks slow, replaced battery and positive cable, the battery connection was cracked on the cable. Truck still cranks slow, it's only been cold enough three times to cycle the heater, but regardless it still cranks slow. Could it be the starter (original) is old and drawing to many amps? How can I test it? The truck used to start easliy, cold or not, until about a month ago.

It could be old age getting to the starter. Any good repair shop should have a DC clamp on amp gage that would tell the amps the starter draws during cranking. I checked mine a few years back. It pulled 375 amps while spinning. I can't remember what the FSM says for cranking amps.

You mentioned replacing the positive wire. I had a hard starting diesel tractor, which eventually wouldn't start. The ground cable was eaten up inside with the "green cancer. " I replaced both wires and clamps, she fires right up now.

Thanks I'll check that. I couldn't find the DC meter so I used a battery load tester, and when I cranked the starter it would draw close to 1000 amps, almost down into the red, but the battery tested fine, so I think the starter is the culprit.
