My 5. 9 is cranking slow. It needed battery cables bad, I put them on. I had failed to ad water to my battery for a long time and cooked it. I installed a 950 cca battery and it tested good. I am thinking the starter could be due for brushes. The truck has 295000 miles. Any other quick checks? Thanks in advance.

Minimum recomended CCA is 1075 cca I believe. Group 31 as well.

Remove the starter and take it apart, simple job, check the brushes and you'll more than likely find what looks like gun powder. Typical for a high mileage starter. This will be whats left of the brushes. Brushes are somewhat cheap, contacts and plunger =cheap. Replace those items yourself, very simple, and you have a rebuilt starter-sorta. This is what I've done to two CTD's.

Get yourself a group 31 1200+cca battery your truck will appreciate it.

2 years ago my starter was turning too slow to start the truck. Battery (1 1/2 years old) tested good with the tester at my son's repair shop.

I bought a new battery, made up new cables, problem solved.

I would suggest new cables (pricey) and the Larry B starter kit along with some new brushes.

That way you're starter is good to go for a LONG time... plus the Larry B kit will help on those really cold days or might make the difference between running and a dead battery in a pinch.
