Hi,

I am trying to diagnosis a vibration. The vibration is only apparent when coming to a stop. With or without the clutch in. Even when costing in neutral. It starts to occur at about 20mph. Continues till the truck is stopped. It's hard to describe but it feels like the abs is trying to kick in. I am coming to a slow stop, no possibility of impending brake lock up.

It's intermittent, started a few days ago.

Until this time the truck was perfect. It's a 2004. 5 600 with 3:73's and a 6 spd. Just turned 40,000 miles. Driveline is totally stock. Tires are BFG's. No recent work done to the truck. No hard tows. Towed about 2500#'s to 2 bike rallies recently. I am the only driver. No burnouts, no banging gears ect. The truck leads a charmed life.

Any ideas appreciated.

So Far:

I pulled all the wheels and checked all the brakes and calipers. Brakes are like brand new. No seized pistons in calipers.

Checked all fluids. Rear dif, Front dif, nv5600, and X-case. All fluids appear to be in good shape visually. Color normal and after pulling a sample no evidence of metal shavings. Fluids in difs were changed at 15K. nv5600 & x-case fluid is original fill. I actually was going to be changing fluids on Saturday, the vibe started Friday after work pulling into the driveway. The wife was in the truck and she yelled, push the clutch in. That's what the vibe felt like. The first time was the worst.

I haven't pulled the driveshafts but there is no apparent play in any of the u-joints.

Can I run without a front driveshaft for troubleshooting purposes?

The steering gear feels tight. Knuckles, the u-joints, on the front axle also appear tight.

Like I said. The first time it happened was Friday after work pulling into the driveway. That was by far the worst. It felt like I tried to stop without pushing in the clutch. From that time on it's very slight. Almost feels like the abs is trying to kick in. But I don't feel chater in the brake pedal. Never used abs in this truck so I'm not sure how bad the chatter is in the pedal when the abs cycles. I'm going to try to hammer the brakes and engage abs when we get some rain. Starting to think I might be imaging things. Any ideas appreciated.

Pull the rear, ujoints will probably be tight, sticky ... ... ... ..... no way to add grease.

If its u-joints I would recommend taking it to a driveline shop and get them to straighten/balance the drveshaft and put better u-joints in as apposed to the OEM ones from DC... .

I did mine and it was well worth it and the price was very reasonable I think about 100 bucks to straighten it + u-joints.

Anyone have this vibration problem with a 2wd, 65-70 MPH? My truck is a "97" dually could it be U joints? Sometimes it appears the bed is going to shake right off!

A big thanks to everyone. Pulled the driveshaft last night. My driveshaft is a one piece with no carrier. The rear u-joint, on the axle side, was so tight I couldn't rotate it at all. The driveshaft is at a driveshaft shop now getting greaseable u-joints.

You can send check or money order to... .

Imagine what the dealer would have charged to fix that. All the diagnosis, then telling you that it's normal, maybe they'd rotate the tires, tell you to drive it that way and see if it goes away, and then hand you a bill for $600 :-laf

Just when I think the TDR saves me a little money, I learn something and have to go spend some money! Let us know how much the driveshaft shop charges for the work.

Would bad u-joints be accompanied with a "squeaking" noise. I just started getting a vibration yesterday, most noticeable at 25-35 mph... Doug

Yep.

Driveshaft back in and everything is back to normal, no vibrations. I have the 2 u-joint 1 piece drivshaft. It's a 6spd, quad cab, short box. The replacement joints were the Precision 351's. They went in with no mods required. The front u-joint seemed fine. The rear joint was completely out of grease. Entire job was $94, including 2 joints. I took the driveshaft out and took it in to the shop. The guy races and was pretty busy on Friday, so he didn't spin it (balance it). I had no issues before so I figured it wasn't necessary. I marked everything and it was re-installed with the same phasing as original. Thanks again.

Yep.

Yep is right. I just changed all 3 u-joints in mine. The middle one was the worst, the needles were dust :( . Replaced all of mine with greasable units. This is the main reason I didn't let the dealer do them. I know they would replace only the bad one with the same crappy non-greas-able ones. Seems u-joints should last longer than 34k. Thanks for the reply... Doug
