I have a '98 12v that I just rebuilt, I had the pump and injectors recalibrated, but it seems to me that the truck takes a few seconds to build good power and even then just does not seem right, but no matter how light I keep my foot on the pedal it puts out a giant puff of black smoke, and when I am cruising around my EGT runs at around 7-800 preturbo at about 50 mph. One other note when I have the truck in neutral and rev the motor up to about 1400-1500 rpm the motor begins to stutter and you see some white smoke, like it is not firing completly on all six. In my mind I have believe the valves to not be seating completely, but I also think maybe it could be mistiming on the pump.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

makman,

Black smoke = unburned fuel.

Try turning your AFC starwheel back a few notches(like 20 or 30)

It mite get rid of black smoke

White smoke not enough fuel/ or to much air for fuel ratio.

Is it stuttering in gear at same rpms?

Contact Evan A Beck or Piers they know a lot more about injection pump than me.

Hey Makman,,, Welcome to the TDR!!!! Sounds like your timing could be way too low. Thats just my guess. When reving the engine, mine stuttered/ white smoked when the timing was at 11. 5*(stock),reset it to 15. 5* and stutter is gone. Wait to see what the experts say.

Mine does the stutter thing with the white smoke, but only while I'm really smashing it in neutral.

AFAIK my timing is still at the stock setting, unless it slipped.

It dont do this while I'm under way.

Slow start? Can be many things. Low idle, air in the fuel system, timing?

I think the EGT's you mentioned are fine though.
