I have a 1998 12 valve with 235000 miles and it starts hard, I have to crank and crank and then it will start.

However, if I push down on the throttle a little bit it starts right up.

What is the problem and how do I fix it?

mine does the same thing. I've been told its possibly the fuel return line, which then again I've been told is more than likely not it.

I've just learned to live with it. :(

I have this problem too. I'll tap the throttle gently and it fires right up. I wonder if the fuel shut off silenoid has anthing to do with this?

I think the hard start as you describe is do to low idle. turn up the idle a bit (just like stepping on the throttle) and it should fire right up.

Ever since I turned my idle down mine does the same thing. It's normal.

Just put your foot lightly on the throttle when youre cranking it.

How high is your idle? You say its too high. I'm just wonderin because i turned mine up to 950rpms to fix this starting issue..... I know a few guys that have theirs pegged at 1000 rpms when it starts, this is with foot off the pedal 100% idle. I always thoguht it was ok to turn up the idle I mean afterall they sell the aftermarket high idler kits for extended idle periods. . i think it keeps em revved right at 1000rpms... .

I've always had the same crank crank crank start up. Touch the go pedal and crank going.

I turned up my idle a lot due to a new tight converter. Guess what? Still the same crank crank crank unless I touch the pedal.
