SLT Chrome to Sport monochrome grill?

Has anyone gone from a chrome SLT grill to a monochrome sport grill, or the other way? I want to pick up a white monochrome grill from a 99 sport for my 99 SLT, but have heard they are different somehow. Anyone else do this swap?

I would assume that they are mounted the same on either truck. Id go down to the dealer and open a few hoods.

I don't know when the change took place, may have been '99... but the later sport gilles are taller, so the bumper is notched in the middle to clear the taller sport grille, more involved swap then ya might think.

Hood, bumper, headlights...

Can't wait until mine gets here.

I'm partial to the sport nose myself- You may want to take the opportunity to get a sport nose from a 1500 off road truck- these have notches for factory frame mounted tow hooks- I can't believe i've got a 30K+ 4x4 without standard factory tow hooks let alone decent provisions for mounting them. Anybody got any decent solutions?

Answered the question! My local dealer was nice enough to have a 99 Sport 1500 and a 99 SLT 1500 parked next to each other on his used lot this morning. The 99 Sport grill hangs quite a bit lower - no way it would fit with a 99 SLT bumper.

The dealer also had a 97 Sport, and that one looked like a direct grill swap to my 99 SLT. Anyone know what year the Sports got fancy new-style grills? 98 or 99?

The hunt is one for a old style white Sport grill! Thanks for your help guys.

Wait just a minute Vic! Note my signature below... I have a '98. 5 Sport (last year using the older style Sport grille AND bumper assembly) although, I NOW have the '99+ Sport grille added to my Ram. Looks real sweet too! #ad


If you want to add the '99+ Sport grille to any year SLT from '94 through present or any year Sport through '98, you have one of two options. Either the entire bumper and grille assembly must be changed to the '99+ Sport version (pain in the butt as the bumper does not directly bolt on... some welding and light fabrication must ensue), or the top of the SLT style bumper has to be modified to accept the '99+ Sport grille BEHIND the bumper (when the hood is closed). I chose the latter route as I prefer the look of the '98 Sport bumper (at least on a BLACK Sport... same bumper as the SLT only monochromatic). It took quite a bit of time with a die grinder to get the profile of the bumper to match the curvature of the grille. When the job was finished I was rewarded with what I think is the ultimate combination. #ad
If you elect to go the route I did be forewarned that the '99+ Sport grille (about $430. ) requires the use of a different grille frame (about $30. ).

Another option to SLT owners would be to purchase the PRE '99 Sport grille, which would bolt right on without any modifications.
