Piping a wood stove thru wall of metal shop

Brake Pressure Gauge, Diagnostic

Hey BIG! Heres a source. They carry most everything and have regular sales. I dont know about the prices? However, a propane fired forge will work also. They carry both. You may find one at a Farm and Ranch sale. The propane units are what the mobile farriers around here, use. Easier to move. The difference between NG and propane is orifice size and air adjustment. The NG orifice is larger than a propane orifice and they normally screw into each burner.

Father in law and a couple good friends of mine are farriers all have the smaller forages on their trucks for shaping shoes. They make several different sizes that are pretty portable from single burner up to a about a four burner. They are burner handy to have around I catch myself running over to my fil to use his pretty often. Just so much easier to get something good and hot to shape it using the forge over a torch with rosebud.

Find some of the larger more used performance horse farriers in your area and get to know them they will have some older forage that they upgraded from or they will know of some kid that went to shoing school and bought every tool out there only to quit six months later.

I have a friend that has really big one he wants to sell it is a shop only model. Big enough to heat big bushog blades to hammer them out.

That's all I need it for is just my gang 7 mules and the wifes horse. The Horse is harder on shoes than the mules for some reason and the horse doesn't carry any weight? I was looking at Propane but dont know how much propane it would take to do a days worth of shoeing. That could run into some money

for me im not that fast

I know what you mean my BIL does all of our shoeing and I hate to bother him sometimes plus I have to have him come over or I take the animal over there. Its about time I start doing it anyway.

I was kind of thinking about the brake drum forge because I have all the parts for that. I just need to put it all together but dont know about the amount of propane. If I build the brake drum forge Greg what rod would I use on the lincoln? cast iron to re bar weld.

BIG! There is not a good way to make a weld with steel to CI the way you plan on doing it. Rebar is mostly very high carbon steel recycled material. It can also be mixed carbon content. A Nickle rod is commonly used, but you need to butter each piece without overheating the CI or totally preheating the entire CI part to butter up the attachment points. The welds you make are then nickle to nickle. Personally, I'd make a frame with a ring where you could set the brake drum. IMHO, I would not waste time trying to weld to the drum. That way when you burn it out, just drop another one in the ring!

Now, here is the clincher! That drum may be CAST STEEL!

If this is the case, 7018 should be the rod with preheats on both the rebar and the drum. Grind the drum and look at the sparks. CI sparks will be orange/red streaks with no starbursts. Steel sparks will be more yellow with starbursts. The higher the carbon content of the steel, the more starbursts.

Do you have access to coal? Anthracite is what you want!

Keep asking the questions, BIG! we have more than 40,000 experiences to draw from!

You can calculate your propane consumption. You do need to know what size burner you are going to use.
Heres the figures you need to start.
From Answers.com
1 gallon of Propane ~= 4. 23 lbs ~= 91500 Btus

1 lbs of Propane ~=22000 Btus

20 lb tank of propane holds approx 4 gallons of propane (approx 366000 BTUs)

Read more: How many BTU are in a pound of propane
Take your burner BTU/hr figure and use the per pound or per gallon figures to determine your consumption rate.
For example; if you are using a "weed burner" as your heat source with a maximum output of 281,000 BTU's. A 20# (4 gallons) Bottle will last about 1 hour+(1. 3Hrs). This provides about 3500*F. maximum temperature.

Anybody out there find error in my calcs. please feel free to point it out and correct them.

The stoves for hunters tents are coal I personally dont like them they smell weird and Give me a headache big time unless they are ran real hot. We have bags of the stuff.

BIG, Yep, the smoke and fumes from coal are nasty from a naturally aspirated stove. Especially when the fire banked down.

I have a GI Arctic Stove that I used in my tent camp, since 1975. It breaks down and has a C. I. coal grate. Man, that thing will run you OUT of the tent!

They can still be found!

Make sure you have plenty of fresh air when you fire up your forge. The fumes from the coal as well as any carbon monoxide buildup will mess with your health record.

So ya need a blower for the forge? A large Bellows will work. So will a hand cranked blower. Unless you want a powered unit? It will be interesting to see what you come up with! Keep us posted! GregH
