Need to know EGT ranges

Well Folks I finally got to use the Smarty on my truck! All I can say is wow!

I started the day installing an AFE stage II in -2 degree weather! Took about an hour, no big deal and fingers have thawed. :) I took the truck out for a spin, I love the sound and the turbo spooled up a little quicker. I got her home installed a few more goodies and then pulled out the Smarty. The loading took about 2 min and the ABS adjustment took about 20 secs from start to finish. I cleared some fan speed code (which hasn't come back) and I was off for a test ride.

I picked level #9 like anyone would and this thing rips! I know it was super cold out but my EGTs stayed within safe levels even when I mashed the throttle. My trans never slipped which surprised me, but then again I drive like an old man most of the time so it should be in good shape...

I have been having trouble with MPG. I was getting 12MPG at best (by hand AVG) my overhead would read between 9 and 11. In my opinion something was wrong with my truck but the dealer said "sorry no". After the AFE and Smarty the overhead is reading 19. 8 and I was beating on it today! I went right over to get fuel and start a new hand calc tank. I will let you guys know what I end up with . I thought it would of read 8 with it set on #9 and the way I was driving it. I hope the overhead is right LOL!!! I don't think the Smarty gave me the huge increase as much as I think it fixed something that was wrong.

Great Job Marco and thanks for the great service Bob! BIG BIG Thumbs UP!!!

Wow... and my EGT's will quickly climb past my comfort level when mashing the pedal using #5. Funny how different these things react.

Out of curiosity, what smarty sw version? . 205A?

If you're on level 3, what are your EGT's? - I havent tried level 5 yet, but i can floor and hold level 3 and it's hard to get to 1200*... i'm using the Smt4eV405D205a47. zip file.

I am using Smt4EV403D204A. I am reluctant to move up to the newer files because I want my software version to read *******AQ not AR when returning to stock. If I update and go the new stuff I can't go back to the AQ version (a downfall imho).

EGT's are going past 1100* post turbo so I back out of it. It all pointed to needing a bigger turbo to use the fuel but now I'm not sure of that at all.

FYI, i've used all 3 major smarty software releases since the 06 version came out..... fyi, the 2. 04a was 150*+ over the previous version or the current 2. 05a version..... no other differences with the truck between versions... .

I would recommned you try the older version of the software if you are not willing to try the current version... . granted, the older version doesnt have some of the improvements of the newer version, but it controls the egt's almost as good as the current version and much better than 2. 04x.

Good Luck.

Thats interesting news... perhaps I should upgrade it. If only we could go back and forth between the versions.

Good Luck.

I can't load the oldest 06 version onto Smarty and put it on my truck as I will simply get an "Unknown software" message when I try to load it on the truck.

Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate it.

There's other positives about the 2. 05a as well... . power/responsiveness is up over the 2. 04a as well..... it does appear that diff trucks handle the sw's different, but i swear the 2. 05a was significantly better than the 2. 04a..... very, very noticable... and i can reproduce it (and did)... . with the current release of the software... . 2. 05a has the timming specific for non aftermarket injectors..... and 2. 05c for aftermarket injectors (this is the same / similiar to 2. 04a was timming wise according to bob / marco)... night and day difference... . just what i experienced between 2. 04a and 2. 05a... .

FYI, 2. 05a does have some timming rattle when it's cold out. Bob / Marco said it's not an issue, and i believe it, as it runs like an absolute champ... . I'll bet the farm you're happy with the 2. 05a vs. 2. 04a and that you'll significantly reduce if not solve your egt issues... . just my 2 cents.

I am using version "Smarty S-04A Ver. 3. 09B, Data: 2. 05A" The latest one. I went back out to do some running around town and she still only maxed out at 1300 degrees pre-turbo at WOT... Thats on level 9! I wonder if I keep it on #9 and not beat on it if it will still do damage to my trans? You wouldn't think so...

Oh yea and I killed my 1st Power stroke... Muhahahahahaha

The real question is why have 9 if you don't beat on it? :D

I smoked my TC on level 5 moderate TM after 3 days. This followed no problems for over a couple of months with level 5 on Mild TM. Didn't really beat on it either - just the torque being applied at lockup on the freeway on ramp was enough to cause it to slip. You'll know it when you feel the driveline vibration at highway speeds when you touch the throttle. Particularly when you are at 55mph, locked up, and give it just a slight amount of throttle. The TV isn't commanding a massive increse in line pressure, but the motor is putting out a tremendous amount of torque.

I went back to running Mild TM, but with a new TC and VB I run my Smarty on 9 with no slip.

Took one of my dirtbikes to the shop... . on the freeway on ramp... . did 0-100 mph (levl 3)... . just hit 1100* as i let off... .

"I wonder if I keep it on #9 and not beat on it if it will still do damage to my trans? You wouldn't think so... " Yeah, i would think so, borrowed time on your transmission... . even at mild tq mgmt setting... the stock transmission cannot handle 170hp, at least not for very long!

RhinoHD... ... ... ... ..... PLEASE let us know what your hand calc's come up with. The smarty is the last mod I am waiting on... ... ... . I'm looking for MPG's not power (that's just a good side effect). Oo.

Thanks for the info TM! How much did the TC and VB cost you? Which one did you get?

Hey CL,

Its going to have to wait on the MPG. We are getting some snow tonight and tomorrow (I plow with the truck) and the MPG will be shot...

Giachino,

Maybe I want a new Trans LOL... Thanks for the heads up...

Goerends TC, VB and 2nd band apply lever. Total damage $1600. Think it would handle any TM, but in my book more TM=more smoke, and that I don't need with the Vegas smoke police.

neil if smoke is an issue please try running the aftermarket injector software.

This should help nicely.

Thanks

we have so many software options available and more to come we should be able satisfy all.

Bob: Are you saying that an otherwise stock truck that has smoke issues should try the software for the aftermarket injectors?

You were right. I updated the smarty (105A). EGT's are down significantly. I was skeptical but it seems to be the real deal.

i have just put a smarty on my new 07 5. 9 and just let me say wow! I noticed thaton level nine the over head reading keeps increasing but i check it everytime i fill up and it def hurts the mileage on number nine. my over head says that i am getting 18. 8 but when i check it i am only getting 14. 5, granted it only has 1500 miles on it.

Tried level 9 moderate TM with the aftermarket injectors SW (Dec 21 vintage). It does make the smoke clear up faster and once the turbo spools I have a haze versus a black stream of smoke. Seems like there is a little less timing knock, but the EGTs may be just a bit higher.

On moderate TM I do notice that I get the tires breaking loose on the 1-2 shift. Didn't happen on Mild TM.

Thanks for the tip Bob. The tree huggers of Vegas will appreciate your efforts. :D
