Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) smarty idle?

Since installing my smarty my idle has been surging from about 800 to 900 at first this was only when cold below 50. Now it seems to do this all the time. Is this a problem? Truck seems to run fine otherwise have only tried setting #9 since that is what I need. Any ideas?

Does it happen on any other software #'s or just on #9? I'd try returning to stock & reload the program. It could be your cam with the smarty combined.

I have tried reloading and it came back after a week or so. Have not tried any other level so I will also try that. I remember Gary mentioning that he had the same thing but that was not the topic of the thread, maybe he will stop in here and post his results.

Mine has been surging for a while now. I have decided that the culprit is the ULSD.



It does not do the 800-900 surge like you describe. It is more of a romp-romp-romp like a gasser with a big cam only maybe a little faster. And just like you seems to mostly happen below about 50 F OAT.

I'd try some good Cetane boost additive & see if it helps.

Ok it seems to be in all levels

It will be hard to say wheather it is worse or better at a given level since it comes and goes at will. Could this be a sensor? Oh by the way it does not seem to do it with the smarty unloaded although I did not drive the truck I started it and let it idle for a few.

Sounds like your APPS is going south. I'd read issue #54 pg. 20... . it explains how to clean the APPS. My APPS went bad & I got no codes until it went out completely, but it stumbled at mid RPM for 2 months before it died.
