Making the trip to Florance, Or. from Lodi Ca. towing my 5ver up the I-5. Smarty Jr on Performance, 99 %. the X-Monitor showed over 1300 degrees, on the long pulls and I had to back off. I thought the Jr. could be used without gauges, and the programing was designed not to over do the egts. On the 04 Ca. I was thinking that these temps are too high.

I think the "Performance" setting might be a bit hot - was thinking "tow" was the safe mode for pulling loads. Sounds like time for a turbo to me :)

The Smarty JR was tested on a completely stock truck, you have an AFE Stage II intake. Does this intake allow under the hood hot air into the system? I had an AFE Stage I, that did allow engine heat to be mixed with the outside air. That does contribute to hotter egt's.

Not really trying to defend Smarty here, but you also show a VanAken box, was it off?

All trucks behave different, that's why its nice to have gauges, I would say you did a nice job of being observant. I remember when my truck was new, before gauges, the Dealer had installed an EZ on my truck(default was level 3 on the early EZ's). When I installed gauges, I was surprised how hot the egt's were, even pulling my little yard waste trailer I was hitting 1400+.

I know I am probably the village idiot here but I received my Smarty Jr, and after reading the owners manual and the attached documents referring to PoD, TM and Timing, am a little afraid to use it. I know it is because I don't understand the things it is changing or the whole concept of Torque Management. I read where 00 makes the throttle less responsive than 99. What does that mean? I wish the owners manual was written more for a dummy like me than for the Pro's like most of you in TDR. I would love more explanation of the three settings and how all the other changes in Smarty will affect the truck in those settings. I went the route of the Jr for the simplicity. Am I short changing myself if I use the three levels as "economy", "towing" and "Performance"? I know I am having a very difficult time wrapping my head around this one. If anyone out there has a near infinite range of patience and a handle on the Smarty Jr, let me know and I will send you my home e-mail address. Oh, and I apologize for the hijack of the original thread!

With my Edge EZ tow I am often getting 1200. But I have my BD Monitor set at a max of 1200 and when the alarm goes off, I backoff! Climbing up a grade if the temp jumps up I down shift and get the RPM up, and temp goes down. Also the transmission Temp goes down with it!

Smarty

Thanks for all the input.

Sorry I did not mention I have taken the Van Akken off. I was at the 99 setting of performance. Changed to the tow mode and then left the smarty puged in and backed it off to 70 the next day. Spent the last two days enjoyng the sites of Oregon. Will be back on the road tomorrow. The sensor is pre tubro. Never thought about the afe and hot air in hot air out.

On my '03 before the 351 I ran on tow and never saw over 1200 towing grossing 24000 lbs. When the POD came out I ran Perf Level 80 for more power and still safe on my clutch. I could now see 1250 on long grades. I put on the ATS manifold and 4" exhaust and can now see 1250 still but I have >35psi of boost instead of 27 and can pull the hill in a higher gear. It takes a long time to get to 1250. Don't let her rev too high >2500 rpm or too low < 1700 rpm and egts are easy to manage. I still run on Perf 80 and she runs excellent.

Cfollett : I would assume you have an early '04. Get a 351 turbo off of a newer truck and an intake horn and you will be happy. The ATS Manifold dropped my cruising boost by 2psi. Just my opinion of what worked for me.
