Please check out the facts in my sig. I have a 2003 QC 4x4 that I use 100% for towing the 11k 36' 5er. I have KAX Motorsports 80hp injectors and Smarty S06 REVO, not TNT.

I use SW1 only for fear of destroying my stock 48RE.

My optional settings are TM2, TQ2 and RP1. I have run it with TM3 also, but it seems to run best on TM2.

TM2 is for stock injectors, TM3 is for aftermarket injectors (less timing than 2, but more than stock).

My question is: can I run it on TM2 while towing and not hurt the engine?? TM3 is setting for aftermarket injectors, but the truck/engine really seems to run better on TM2. It runs awesome on TM2 with no rattle. I cannot perceive any rattle difference between the two settings, but EGTs are lower, truck runs smoother and getting marginally better mpg's w/TM2 vs. TM3. Also, turbo boost is lower at lower rpms with TM2.

I don't understand the aftermarket injectors and timing theory...

Can you help ease my super anal anxiety???

Thanks,

Louis

Louis towing with timing #2 will give your lower egt's and improved mpg. The aftermarket injector software is actually lower and will run hotter.

Go for it

Bob, thank you !! I appreciate the response and just wanted to be sure that running with TM2 and aftermarket injectors and towing heavy was ok... I hear horror stories about too much timing and cylinder pressures being way too high.

I'm not even sure if the KAX injectors are considered "true" aftermarket injectors because they state they are "OE" on their website. They supposedly add 79hp and 122 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels on an 03' with an automatic...

I love the Smarty... I have no smoke or haze and the truck will pull hard in OD at 1200 rpm if I let it. I take it out of OD to save the trans when this occurs... Unbelievably useable power. Plus, the truck/engine sound awesome. My buddy with a 99' 7. 3 PS loves the deep menacing sound at idle, although he is used to the "marbles in a coffee can" sound... :-laf

Larger injectors effectively advance timing. That is, the larger holes will inject more fuel at a give duration and pressure. So if the injection event is started at the stock time, more fuel will be injected sooner which effectively advances timing. Add to that, a program that starts the injection event sooner you'll get a additive timing effect. So your injectors do advance timing and adding more with the smarty and towing will definitely cause increase cylinder pressure and temps. Will it be too much? Who knows. Know one has a engine dyno with all possible combination of power adders tested. Plus the electronic engines use dynamic timing and the performance vendors consider their changes proprietary, so we really don't know what the timing is. I personally won't tow with more than the "aftermarket" injector timing with your set up. If you wanted to be really safe run stock timing while you tow. Or, up grade to the TNT software which has a "really big injector" timing and try that. That is less advance than the REVO TM3. The stock timing is really retarded so some advance is probably fine. Oh yeah, the TQ setting can be as hard on the transmission as overall power. Level 2 pulls pretty hard down low, I haven't even tried TQ 3 and I have a full DTT.
