bark stops here!

I just wanted DWeiler to clarify if he had to adjust his pop-offs or if he had to adjust his blow off valve.

Having to adjust the pop-offs would mean he is making more boost than before, but having to adjust his blow off could possibly mean that something electronic has changed, or the TPS position had changed for daily driving.

A pop-off regulates boost very similar to an external wastegate in function, but on the cold side of the turbo.

A blow-off is a valve that opens to prevent turbo bark, and is used to release pressure from the intercooler and piping when lifting off the throttle.

I'm not going to get into which is better. That's a whole 'nother story.

Thanks,

Merrick

P. S. The pop-offs are often referred to as blow-offs, so there will be alot of confusion on this subject.

Does smarty change computer accuracy?

I know a lot of guys say their computer mileage is not accurate. But I must be one of the lucky ones even with my mods, 275 injectors, my computer is plus or minus 0. 5 mpg for the tank average which is good enough for me. So we I go to a smarty can I expect the computer mileage to go out of wack???

With just the Smarty (pre-injectors), running the fuel saver program, my overhead computer was pretty close to reality - about 18 MPG on a long highway trip. Running Smarty's program #9 with Mach 4s, the computer claims I'm getting 38 MPG cruising at 40 MPH in 5th gear, 29 MPG cruising at 75 MPH in 6th. My "average" over the last 150 miles is 22. 1 MPG - nearly all city driving with a whole bunch of smoke.

I'm pretty certain the overhead computer is completely out of whack.

Bob Weis/MCummings,its a BD Turbo Guard to be specific, most or all call it a blow off valve,it is mounted just before the Banks High Ram,in the intercooler pipe. It is used to releave pressure from a sudden lifting of the peddle to vent some of the pressure in the intercooler and reduce "turbo bark"or "surging". To be very honest,i haven't adjusted it much before the Smarty, left at stock setting from BD,but when i really put the peddle to the floor and lifted off sudden my B1-2 would still bark through most of the fast shifts. BD even said that i would have to fine tune it to the vehicle and last night was the first chance i got to raelly take my ride for a good row though the gears run after i adjusted the amount of peddle for it to engage and how long the valve opens for--maybe1/3 of a second for now---only barked once. Still needs some fine tunning for sure, but i am only going in gradual steps cause by Mach 4 will be in soon to so will see if that change anything---maybe,maybe not. Gentlemen please note that this truck is still being built to my liking, hobbie ride/toy,only 16500miles since new and there can be weeks before i drive it so sometimes i have to remember/relearn how all this stuff is setup/adjusted,played with/reacts---not a dailey driver. Sorry for the HI-JACK---MY 2 CENTS

I'll see what kinda milage the truck gets this weekend, my wife just went for a 300 mile trip and it had a 100 mile's on it aready. I have the fuel saver program.

SMARTY vs ABS tire size

I've been contemplating putting LT285/75R16E tires on my truck. In preparation for this I decided to see what size SMARTY would read from the ECM with my stock size tires. Would you believe 0. 00"? Interestingly enough, the speedo & and odometer seem to be pretty close based on measured mile posts and roadside radar. The ABS also works. Has anyone else seen this?

Yes, I've seen it. :D

That happens when Smarty receives a tire size from the ABS he does not have stored in his tables. Let's say for example, 28. 60" but Smarty only knows 28. 50".

When the tire size is changed, Smarty stores the value for 28. 60" in his memory.

When you go back to stock settings, Smarty will then write 28. 60'' back into the ABS.

Marco - I was wondering if you had any ideas on the following. This was posted under our Mid-Tenn Dyno thread.

i made 514HP with smarty on number 7 and no other boxes on. and made 537HP no smarty and tst on #7. smarty done a pretty good job i wish i could of dyno with no smarty or boxes. but david give me a couple extra runs already. i made 532HP with smarty on 7 and tst on 7 so with the both of them i lost 5HP than with just tst. :

Any ideas why he lost power when he ran both the Smarty and the TST box? I thought the two were a lethal combination.

Please shed some light on this if you can because a TST box was going to be my next upgrade. I was thinking that adding the TST with what I have would get me closer to the 600HP mark.

I thought WAY WAY back that Marco said "I make no claims of HP increases".

I'll go get my reading glasses and see if I can find it in the 56 pages of the thread

Bob Weis

I do know that my KSB1-B spools way better (quicker) than before, but I attributed that to earlier fueling rather than more fueling.

Yep, I remember him saying that, but I don't think it was meant to be taken literally in all cases...

Also, this was a HP loss, not an increase.

I'll wait for Marco to respond before I say any more on here.

Hm...

Good question, but it makes me I would wonder more why the TST only made 23 Hp more than just the Smarty. I also would wonder about the results if the Smarty was set on 6 instead of 7.

Jim

The dyno curves would tell a lot more than peak numbers. So the peak HP is down slightly or up slightly, but how does the power/torque curve look over the RPM range? It's the old "area under the curve" situation.

Anyone have curves to publish? I am itching to try Smarty with my PM3.

I'm not so concerned about that than the loss of power when both boxes were run. He only had his TST box on 7, so that's only going to give him 100HP or so. I have read that the Smarty will add 60-75 HP depending on the setup, so those numbers aren't far off.

Also, I just want to say that I'm not trying to bash the Smarty at all. It has been my favorite mod hands down! I just don't want to drop the cash on a TST box if it's not going to do anything for me.

Something just doesn't seem right here...

If I remember the even # programs in the smarty do not add timing. The odd # ones do. Running on #7 which adds timing and then stacking the TST on top of that which I believe also add timing, and I am not surprised you lots HP. Marco made reference that you would not run odd # program with a timing box but the even # would work fine if I recall correctly. ;)
