bark stops here!

I have not towed yet with my Smarty, but I know that when I do, I will be on the lower setting.

Practical/safe perhaps - but unfortunately, that eliminates the exact purpose SOME of us buy the add-on power gadgets for! ;) :D

Sorta like switching it off for drag racing, dyno runs and sled pulls... :-laf :-laf

SO, then whatcha do, convert it to a planter for the front yard? :D

It is nice to have power and at 23,000 lbs towing, I prefer the lower settings. Why? Because when you use power in prodigous amounts, things wear out quicker or break at an inconvient time. This is particulary true when towing. I have the Smarty with the Edge-Comp and I could not ask for any more enjoyment, but I have no plans for buying another truck, this one has to last me for a good long time. This truck is an investment, not a throw-away. It is my daily driver, not my weekend drag toy. The mods I have made, allow me to have all the manuvering power I want or need with reason. My goal is to get well over 400,000 miles before I need to start worrying about serious repairs.

Power is an adictive attraction. But all the horse-power and torque is useless when you are broke down hard, because you used it too much and now find yourself in need of an engine and a large towing bill for your truck and what every you were hauling.

I choose to be prudient in the use of my trucks capabilities. ;)

Dave, smarty will have nothing to do with the transmission temperature. A tight torque convertor will.

I have been running a DTT 91% for going on 6 years now.

I was always advised to kick the transmission into neutral when sitting in stop and go traffic and at stop lights.

T/c's can create lots of heat and amsoil will run cooler. Even consider a double deep pan.

I commonly do shift into neutral in heavy traffic to avoid the higher trans temps. In the latest instance I wasn't in traffic at all and just romped on it real good going down the expressway. When I stopped is when I noticed the higher trans temps. I have never had my bands adjusted, could this possibly have something to do with the higher temps??

I do have the Mag HyTek DD pan but only run ATF III

Thanks for getting back to me Bob, I just want to insure I do not do anything to harm this very expensive transmission.

Absolutely! ;) :D

There's a fine line - but a serious and potentially costly one - between careful and selective used of added power, and the reckless "drive it like you stole it" mindset.

My dad didn't buy my truck for me, nor will he be buying a replacement for it or spotting me the $$$ for repairs when I stupidly break something.

I actually drive quite conservatively under most situations - I appreciate the "push" in the back with an occasional nudge of the accelerator - and use my added power is primarily to stay with or ahead of other traffic in the hills when RV towing.

So far, even before the Smarty, mission accomplished! Oo.

More Smarty info

I went for a 300 mile tripe this weekend. I had a 1500# pop up camper on and a small trailer with three qauds gas and gear. Smarty was on number 7. Some highway and secondary roads. It pulled great. Took very little throttle movement to make it up any hills. I got 14 mpg. Pretty happy with it. The truck drive effortless with the load.

I am going to run the fuel saver all the way to vegas next week. 1200 miles in 2 days. I will run #9 on the return trip. same route both ways

I Just ran fuel saver on a 400 mile trip empty 200 of it was on interstate, the rest was state roads and there was 20 miles of city driving. I got 18. 7 on fuels saver

What's with all the silence here?

No new revelations or driving results?

Surely some new info on towing, or various settings in different driving situations? Any new results - even BAD ones the rest of us should be aware of?

When did the last Smarty shipment go out - or are guys waiting for a new shipment?

Yeah, it's been a bit quiet here... ... ... ... ... . I got mine from Rip about a month ago, ran #9 for all but most of one tank which I tried out fuel saver on. Impressed with both 9 and FS but jeesh, after running 9 talk about addicted to the throttle response! Mileage on 9 is actually up about . 5 mpg (I hand calculate every tank since I've owned the truck - 32K miles now). Last Friday morning Robert put a set of Mach 1's in my truck. So running 9 and the new injectors for 1/2 a tank netted me a fuel mpg of 19. 8... ... ... ..... mix of about 70% freeway, 30% city. Fully expect to average 20 mpg running it on 9... ... ... ... ... ... no way I can complain about that. This with a QC 4x4 running 315 tires and 3. 54 gears.

Personally all I *needed* was the Smarty but the extra zip the injectors gave me along with the fuel mileage make me an extremely satisfied customer. I am done... ... ... ... ..... for now, maybe forever. If anything... ... ... maybe an HX and a TST but all talk about the 'slippery slope' aside I am more than content with the power.

That said, I do wish the '1400-1700 rpm' lag (called the surge by others) could be addressed. It is real, it is there, and it wasn't there with the EZ.

Lag.

Ft,

I have also experienced a lag or pause in the same RPM range. Its almost as if it surges then pauses with not much throttle response ,then it kicks in again at about 1800 to 2000 RPM and zoom. I am happy with this product and would recommend it to others. I would like to know if others are experiencing the same thing and if there is a fix.

Thanks,Mike

My face is hurting from the grinning. I still am on SW#7, have been teasing myself into not using #8 or #9 yet, but will soon.

Bob Wagner: how did your 1200mile trip go and do you have results of your scientific mileage calculation to report in detail to the group?

Thanks

Tim

Mike and FT, I've had my Smarty now for about 3500 miles on an 01 QC 4X4 6spd. I have never noticed that "lag" between 1400-1700 rpm. Mine seems to pull hard right from the start. I dynoed last weekend and the runs started at 1500 rpm. According to the chart, HP & Torque climb sharply with no dips or lags. Torque tops out at 2000 rpm and begins to fall off. HP is maxed at about the same rpm but stays flat all the way to 2800 rpm then begins to slowly drop to 3300 rpm. HP is almost a flat straight line. LOVE that Smarty:)

Never notice any lag in mine - running on Smarty #8, with Comp usually on 1x1. Response comes in noticeably lower in RPM than before the Smarty - but not as radical or extreme as some owners report - just VERY good! ;) :D

One thing I *have* experienced, is several P0216 codes along with the notorious Smarty-generated P0602 - never even the SLIGHTEST problems noted in power or performance - no misses, jerks or anything. I'm hoping it is a random combination of the ECM seeing the P0602, along with the effects of running both the Smarty and the Comp together...

Been running with the ECM back to stock for the week - no codes of any type so far.

It'll bear watching - wonder if any other Smarty/Comp users have experienced this?

Thank God for a spare rebuilt VP-44 back in the toolbox!

No lag here of any kind! I have played with most of the settings but it always goes back to #9. I have pulled my gooseneck a few times around town this week and the truck is a beast! :D It seems the lag is on auto trucks. I also think the Smarty works very, very well with the H. O. ! My peak TQ on the dyno was at 2200 rpm with no sign of any lag.

You can look at my signature and can say that my brief experience with Smarty #9 was nothing short of miraculous. No lag, some smoke, and smooth power increase over mods. Maybe the DD2's and the DTT contribute. Oo.

Mine sure seems flat until about 1700 rpm, I just assumed I had a different idea of "low end" power than everybody else  Its more than the EZ but certainly not tear out the clutch type of change.
