Several pages back in this thread GMcLeod sez:

"Now this is where I open up my can of worms! I only get 15 mpg with the SMARTY and the drop in boost (turbo Bark) going into overdrive"

At the beginning that left me stumped, mileage that is. Then I got other stuff on my mind and almost forgot about it. SORRY!

Say, your truck is an AT? Reason I ask is... ehmmm. I believe a few Smarty's have been loaded by some stupid a..... who did not know what he was doing (Read=Marco!) with the wrong software revision.

Did you notice by chance a higher idle and stronger low idle governor?

If so, a few ( Couple ) Smarty's could have been loaded with SW version 2 instead of 1 but still display # 1... Software version 2 is the one for the extreme cold climates and yes it kills mileage... . :{

Please update your Smarty and let me know how it goes.

Marco

Yes I'm running the cold weather software. :{ In the winter time around Wyoming and my snowmobile habit :-laf I often see temps of -30F, or lower, while in the mountains. I'm also aware of the #1 diesel causing poor fuel economy. :{ I will be switching software versions now that summer is here and #2 diesel is available. Oo. I'll let you know how it works out and as fare as the overdrive thing I mentioned in my post, well I must have hit my head. :D My truck has run strong, without any problems. :-laf

I downloaded the new files and installed the driver. When I run the USB it comes up with Smarty file not found. They are in the same folder. Can anyone help with what I may be doing wrong.

when you run the usb. exe you need to go to file, open then get the smte file in the box and then you are armed and dangerous :-laf

Marco,

I was about to test the new versions and update my SMARTY but I have a question. Do I first need to 'unlock' my Smarty by reinstalling the Stock Software before I update my Smarty with the latest Software Version 07?

I'm thinking the new software would NOT know that I already have a version loaded on my truck and if I put new software in the Smarty, it might complain when I try to update my ECM with the new software load.

Maybe I can help Pete when I have my USB download working.....

Thanks,

Mick

mick, marco is away sailing. No you do not have to go back to stock to update the software.

But when you plug smarty back into your truck it will show "stock" software.

no big deal just change to whatever program you like.

Thanks Bob,

I was just worried that Smarty would look at my VIN and tell me "it's locked" .

Here goes... ... .....

Pete,

Just a couple of thoughts. Did you UNZIP the Version 07 Smte files?

Even though I had all the files unzipped, when I first tried to download the

Smte1. smt file, it told me "File not found". Next I shut down the USB. exe program and restarted it, clicked on File and then Opened the smte1. smt file in the Smte1_07 directory that was created when I unzipped the original file. This time it loaded just fine. Took about 8 minutes.

Mick

PS, I sent you an Email with my phone number in case you need me to update your Smarty. ;)

UPDATE: I Connected Smarty to my truck (which still had the older Smte1_06 Software #9 loaded) and the "Updated" Smarty knew #9 was loaded. I then loaded (the new version 07) Software #7, it took about 1 minute 55 seconds. Next I verified my Tire size remained at 34. 25 and it had. Next I loaded Software #9 (the new version 07) and it completed in 1 minute 24 seconds. Pretty slick.

Well, I just got back from a trip up to Spokane and back. The ECM was on program #8 and I kept my speed between 55 and 60 mph steady. My total mileage was 739 miles with fuel usage of 23. 125 mpg. So I am very pleased with the #s. The last mileage test I did was when I picked the Smarty up at Bob's place and we installed the fuel saver program, I got 22. 3 mpg at a steady 60 mph.

So I am somewhat baffled right now but pleased. :)

I was also pleasantly suprised when I installed mine. Right after install of SW#9, is there any other?, I went on a trip to the coast. This is a trip/route that I drive fairly often, always the same way and I always hand calculate my mileage on every tank of fuel. Pre Smarty, I always got between 19. 2 and 19. 9 mpg. On SW#9 I have made this same trip twice and got 20. 45 mpg and 20. 48 mpg. And I do play around quite a bit with the throttle as I do so enjoy the acceleration and the little smoke clouds on shifting...

Smarty huffing !!

Just got back from a short camping trip over the long weekend, the first pull with the Smarty. All was not well :( I had the Smarty set on #7 going down to the campground which is only about 65 miles south of me. No long grades just flat freeway. Pulling onto the freeway when the truck would shift from 2nd to 3rd at about 30MPH the turbo would huff badly. This was at about 10 lbs of boost. I thought it was really odd as I could not get the turbo to bark with the truck alone unless I was really on it and had to let off suddenly. I changed the setting to #4 for the trip home, same problem  I literally was babying the truck home to keep it from huffing. I can't imagine how this thing is going to act when I get it in some real mountains and have to get on and off the throttle in traffic.

This is not a good thing, I don't want to grenade this turbo.

Marco - Bob, any ideas??

Only seems to do it when I have a load on the truck. I ran it in fuel saver for about 300 miles and never had the problem. at #9 it would bark the turbo when the truck was empty if I was really on it and had to get off the fuel suddenly, other than that it has never done it when I was not pulling my trailer.

I wonder if that housing on your turbo has anything to do with that? Mine has never huffed, with any turbo combo. But I have always run smaller exhaust housings.

Questions concerning Smarty and the HO engine

Well I just finished reading all the posts in this thread. What a wonderful discussion!

I really would like Marco to chime in the answer for my question, other feel free, but I think Marco is the only person that can truely answer it.

I've seen lots of previous questions concerning the compatability of the HO engine and the Smarty. Concerns about too much timing, too high of Peak Pressure, towing loads, etc. Here is my question:

Marco has stated that Smarty knows what engine it's working with by looking at the stock code before it modifies the code. Therefore I assume if Smarty knows it's hooked up to a HO, it will have the appropriate timing included in the programs that have additional/modified timing. I have been told and seen recommendations to only run the even programs on the HO, and that the odd programs have the timing for the SO engine. Is this true? Or have you in your infinite wisdom selected timing maps for the HO that are compatible with it's CR, etc?

My concern is, like others have related, I bought my truck to own for a long time. If I modify it, I really would like to know how much more I'm stressing it. I don't mind losing some of the longevity, but certainly not looking to lose a lot.

Thanks again Marco for all your dedication and hard work.

Not the Marco!!!

OK, I confess, I am not Marco! Not that anyone would even consider confusing us (my foriegn languages leave everything to be desired!).

BUT, I do have over 100,000 miles experience with the Catcher/Smarty on my '01. The Catcher is the same as SW#9 on Smarty which has timing added. Used it for over 70,000 mi which included towing half of the time. The only problem I had was way too much power for the loads I was hauling. Since upgrading to the Smarty I have run mostly on SW#1 which allegedly is mega timing. Again, absolutely no probs.

By the way, my truck had almost 400,000 mi when I installed the Catcher and it now stands at 495,000 mi. My experience tells me that there is little if any longevity issues.

Enjoy!
