This is my 4th Cummins powered Dodge Ram. All occasionall had smoky smelll in cab usually resolved with highway driving or trailer pull. Overall Great Trucks as is this one.
Our 2017 has been a daily driver, now ~45,000 miles and occasional smoke like smell in cab in cooler weather with too much slow driving, idle time etc. This one is harder to resolve with highway driving and now I don't have hay or tractors to haul,so less highway and trailer time. No visible smoke, smells different than exhaust at tailpipe.
Is this a 'wastegate outflow" or something else? No warning lights and dealer says they found no diagnostic codes?
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Jim Raver

My 17 3500 does same thing, It is doing a re-gen.

Okay. So highway driving should help complete the cycle then?

It's about a 10 mile process for my '18, but is mostly seamless to the driver. It's possible the smell is either the regen cooking out the DPF or stuff getting cooked off the exterior of the exhaust, or both.

Do you let it get to operating temp when you drive it? i.e. no short grocery getting trips.

Some short trips mixed with 30 minutes 2-4 c per week. Usually the 30 minute trips have about 10-15 minutes on highway. Clearly worse with too many short trips and heavy traffic at slow speeds. Thanks. JimR
