Has anyone run into a heavy oil or diesel smell entering the cab on the 01 Quad cabs? I bought a new truck and have changed the oil like the dealer said to do, since they apparently used a different , thinner oil at the factory. the smell is still there to some extent, after even beefing up the cowl ,firewall, gasket with a piece of 1/4 in. hose. It is really irritating on this otherwise great truck. The 3 dealers I called all acted like they barely knew what I was talking about. I can't believe Daimler would let a problem like this go unsolved. My wife is definetly giving me what for since our 92 Dodge was a wonderful truck with no prob. , especially this headache smell

thanx for responding, I tried the bottle, cleaned the crap out of it, even added perfume, Blocked two of the three holes in the bottle. The thing that helped the most was the cowl seal fix, but the smell is still there. If you totally remove the bottle what happens for the breather? How do you disconnect it? Do you just leave the top of the cam gear cover open where the hose first comes out of the case? Do you run another longer hose somewhere?

Hemmiville, take the bottle off all together, get a slip on hose connection and 2 clamps and extend it below your radiator , then tie wrap the hose so it wont get caught in the fan, it works great and you will eliminate the oder ... ... ... . Kevin

Oil smell.

Its not uncommon to get a little bit of oil smell after a oil change, it seems worse if you use Rottela T. I still do even using Delo but only for a little while maybe a hundred miles or so. And I moved the bottle back and to the side.

Yep, just as Kevin stated, lose the bottle, extend the hose down to the track bar and tie it off. This way, the vapor is going down to the ground and not being sucked in by the fan. Mine has this way for over six months now, works great, though I kinda miss the smell somewhat :D .

If you pull the bottle up through it's zip tie and unscrew the cap, you will see that it is held on by another wire tie underneath ( mine was anyway). I removed the tie under the cap, removed the cap, added a 3/4" to 3/4" barbed adapter and a length of 3/4" heater hose, ran the hose through the zip tie that held the bottle, zipped it tight and added another zip tie at the track bar, this one not being so tight as to restrict movement. You really want to becareful with the extension of the hose, try to keep it short to avoid a freeze up if you are in the colder climates, could result in blown engine seals. My original re-route had the hose ending back by the trans. , too long if you live where it gets real cold come winter.

And I use Rottela T.

Ooo-ooo that smell..cant you smell that smell..

Hemiville, it's the oil that is causing the smell

not the bottle itself. Don't block off the vent

holes in the bottle. Cleaning it out will not

fix the odor, but it is a good idea to empty the

bottle every other oil change. For the odor, the

best thing to do is not use Rotella T; a few other brands will smell too. I was

using Amsoil in my duallie and it would smell for

a day or so then be totally gone. I now have a

2500 and just changed the oil using Rosmella T :D

and WOW it smells bad. . sitting at a traffic light

is the pits! I am going to switch to Amsoil in

this truck after I get 10,000 miles on it. That

will be a while since I now have 3,400.

Like the others suggested, you can reroute the

breather. I may do that myself for now.

OK guys, what other oil brands besides Amsoil and

Delo reduce the oil odor?? Post your results!

Oil Spots

What about the oil spots on the driveway Scott? I dont want my driveway with oil spots all over it, makes the truck look bad you know. Thats why I havent remved my bottle. ;)

The complete solution

If you really want to solve the problems of:

1) Oil smell

2) Oil drips on driveway/garage

3) Dirty undercarraige/engine compartment

4) Environmental issues (with leaving oil behind)

5) "dumping" a quart of oil when descending steep hills offroad

Get the Walker Airsep. It creates a closed crankcase system and recycles that oil back into the engine. It solves all of the above issues and as a bonus creates a slight vacuume in the crankcase which is supposed to elievate some of the pressure on the rings and (in theory) increase engine life.

I have one and it works great - I change my oil and use Rotella - no smell - no leaks. It isn't cheap, but its worth not hearing the complaints ;) from the passenger side and it'll give you that warm fuzzy feeling about doing something good for the environment

Chris, at home my driveway is stone, would be hard to see but. non the less, have never seen a drop on the stone. At work, I park on asphalt, never have seen some much as a drop.

The Rotella smell is one that has been around since the past springtime. They changed some additive formulas in order to control soot, and the former sweet smell of the oil has vanished and been replaced by a pungent smell that I can only associate with the smell that you get when you take a main bearing cap off and remove the bearing. Believe me, I don't particularly like it, but it's not gonna stop me from using the oil. As a 12 valver, I have always had spots of oil emanating from the breather tube, especially during the hot weather. I still have a couple cases of the old formula Rotella that I haven't tapped into due to the bulk drums of it that we have at the shop.

smelly 01

Thanks for all the replies. I will certainly remove the bottle and reroute the hose, tomorrow. Like I said my 92 didn't smell and didn't leak a drop. Sorry, but I use Delo, have for years, so being the old man that I am will continue to do so. Daddy, why does your new truck smell so bad , huh, daddy, huh?? someone did tell me that the Germans detest leaks of any kind ergo the bottle. But, he said, the funny thing is even with Mercedes they have bottle collectors all around the motors so they won't leak on the ground, owners don't like that. They leak, but out of sight out of mind??? Is this a carry over to Cummins, even though they DON'T leak??

It's not a leak though, but a design of the engine. This heavy duty engine has an open crankcase vent. A very uncommon thing of the nineties. What Mercedes does with theirs is recirculate it into the intake of the engine, which makes it ungodly black and gunk filled. Who cares about a couple of drops coming from the tube. That's the function of the tube. To get rid of engine blow-by. Without it working properly, the front and rear main seals of the engine would leak, as these engines do not like any crankcase pressure.
