Does anyone know if there is a filter under the dash that needs to be changed so the A/C doesn't stink? As soon as I turn it on it starts to smell, but it still gets cold.

Thanks

Dirty socks

I have been sucessful with the stinky odors by spraying Lysol Disenfectant in through the vents below the windshield with the AC on high fan speed. GM also has a sray on the market in local auto parts stores . Lysol is much easier to obtain and works very well. Give it a try you will be amazed how nice your truck will smell!! Good Luck ! Yes... what he said, also I put it on vent a minute or two before I have to stop the truck.

This sort of thaws out the coil and/or gets a lot of condensation out of the heat/cool box.

If the water aint sitting there, it wont start to stink. :)

The odor is caused by mold growing in the vents & HVAC box.

Check to make sure that the drain for the evaporator is not clogged, and as suggested, flip the A/C off for a few minutes before shutdown.

The best thing to spray into the vents (go from the defroster side) if you're not using the spray from the dealership is Tinactin or one of the other athlete's foot sprays. They are anti-fungal and will keep the odor from coming back.

This is most common in humid climates.

Like it was said, the Lysol tric works well. Just roll down the windows and crank the fan up with the A/C blasting and spray a BUNCH of lysol into the vent inlet (base of the windshield?).

Then switch it to vent for a while and let the truck fumigate.

Switching it to vent before you shut down allows the ducting to warm up enough to where you won't have moisture condensing inside, thus leaving water and possibly mold in your intake.

Haven't yet had to do this with my truck, but my Nissan had to have it done about every 6 months in GA (then I started turning off the AC and the problem went away).

Popular Mechanics Magazine...

Okay, in the September 2004 edition of Popular Mechanics magazine on page 118 in the "Car Care" section they recommend drilling a small hole in the A/C plenum and spraying "air cooling coil coating" inside. Additionally, they have numerous other great ideas to rid your ride of bad fumes.

I just did this. It worked!!!!!

One more thought,

Don't know if your truck has a vent door like my 96, but mine is right behind the glove box. I sprayed that opening as well.
