It's good to be a cummins owner again! I had to sell my '02 last summer and now I just bought a 97 4x4, manual, ex cab with 95,000mi. It has 4" exhaust from turbo on back. I believe the injectors and fuel plate are stock. I am getting a fair amount of smoke on start up and heavy acceleration. I actually feel kinda bad for anyone behind me:{. Can anyone give me an idea of what to blame this on? Anything to look for? Is it natural because the exhaust is so opened up? ALSO, can anyone recommend a good disel shop to take it to in the Portland, Or. area? Thank you in advance. Good to be a part of TDR again and not just a lurker:D

Contact the Northwest Boomers, they are a TDR chapter, maybe they can help with suggestions and save some change. Do some searching and read a bunch from the archives. Don't know about a shop in your area.

dirty air filter, "adjusted cam plate" :-laf and loose setting on the star wheel are the simple easy explanations, mine can smoke like a tire fire if i let it and with the cam plate forward on mine if i take off just right the arm can undershoot the cam plate and it can black out as much road as you want :D

Source Automotive is at 17325 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Ste F in Milwaukie

Be careful, Rip might give you a shove and your boots already appear to have grease on the soles. :-laf

EDIT: Eric at vulcan performance is also a good guy, just over the river in the "couve" :)

I removed the cam plate on my '96. If I drive sanely, it will not emit any visible smoke. If I want to make whatever is behind me disappear, a little lugging, then flooring it will black out the entire road. Needles to say, I seldom do this, but the 12 valve engines are easy to "misadjust" :D and can produce lots of smoke (and power!) Sounds like you have a good truck that is already hopped up.

thanks for all the replies. like an idiot, i didn't check the air filter. the truck has a k&n that was SO dirty. I've never seen an air filter that bad. got the cleaning kit for it and put a cheapo fram in there for now, and, WOW. hardly any smoke.
