I have a 91. 5 3/4 4X4

I have read the thread on VE pump and now have a headache... .

Must have missed the smoke screw adjustment which I think was Pic 8

Anyway, my pig seems to smoke a lot as I go threw the gears and not really mashing the loud pedal. I have adjusted the fuel screw at different times and think I have it back to stock????

Cam someone tell me or give me a link on how to mess with the smoke screw.

Like which way to turn and how much to experiment with.

Thanks

Thank you. I didn't see that one in my search but was in a hurry.

Question on that report?

Turn the T-25 screw 2 turns clockwise and tighten the locknut to 125 in-lbs. For additional fuel (and smoke) the screw may be turned farther (CW). Back it off (CCW) to reduce smoke.

That is fine for more power. I just noticed that with my camper on my truck is smoking a whole lot more than previously with that same weight.

Is there a risk of backing off the screw to much and frigging something up? I was thinking of starting with 1/4 or 1/2 turn CCW. Does that sound ok?

I have my main fuel screw set so that I never exceed 900 degrees while pulling long hills in the mountains. My idle came up to around 900 RPM

This adjustment will only come into play when the injection pump is sending fuel to the cylinders when there is no boost.

After turning up the pump a little (one turn in on the full power screw, 90* on the AFC, 1/4 turn CW on the starwheel) I had to back the smoke screw off a turn to get the smoke to an acceptable level. I didn't notice any change in performance. :)

Had you turned the smoke screw previous to the other adjustments, or did you do the other adjustments and have to back off the smoke screw from stock? I'm just trying to figure out all of these adjustments before i start screwing with mine.

That interesting. I bought my truck used and the cap looked like it was still sealed on the main fuel screw.

I first installed gauges and ran my truck for a few weeks to establish a baseline on what was stock and normal for my truck.

Then I changed the exhaust housing from 21 to 16MM and ran a straight pipe in place of the exhaust and out the side so I only had the front pinch in exhaust.

I think I only turned in my fuel screw about 1/2 turn and was up to 1,200 deg F on long hills (sensor after housing).

I then added the banks exhaust and intercooler about a year later.

I only smoked bad at WOT. I eventualy decided I didn't need all that power and backed off the screw so I was only able to get 21# of boost and my temp never exceeded 900.

To late for the transmission. I had to rebuild it last year and I don't drive it as much. 140K miles and it smokes a lot much of the time under throttle.

I will go mess with the smoke screw and take it for a spin If I have the right size Torx

When my truck was stock, I tried one full turn CW and it was too much. . huge black cloud at launch.

I backed it off 1/4 turn and that seemed perfect.

Seems to me that the smoke screw adjustment is pretty sensitive... at least on my pump.

I initially turned the smoke screw in a turn and a little more on the starwheel but it smoked way too much for me. I backed the starwheel up a bit and turned the smoke screw back to stock, which helped but still had a bit more smoke under low boost than I liked. So, I backed the smoke screw off a little more - it does good if I let the boost build up a bit before I mash on it, but will still put out a decent could if I just stomp it from a dead stop.

At WOT it puts out a pretty good haze but not a soot cloud, so I'm satisfied with that. Now I just have to figure out a way to keep the EGTs down when towing heavy - the truck has plenty of power but I just can't use it all. :(

Haven't found any leaks, and my boost numbers haven't dropped (except for the short time I had the pump turned down to get the truck smogged... then they were a bit low;)). When I have a little more time and motivation I'll look everything over again. :)

EDIT: ... or were you speaking to EZGZ? :p
