Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Smoke

Was lookin at pictures of trucks blowin black smoke, how do they force that and is it bad for the motor,

lots of smoke with larger injectors at low boost. like when you floor it from a stop sign or get on it while cruising the highway in a higher gear with no/low boost. i don't think there's any negative effect on the engine, but mpg suffers and the cops probably won't like it!
