Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Block question

Okay, my lift pump is dead. Confirmed today. I've done a lot of searches on the TDR on the subject, and I suspect that this topic may be the most popular subject here. I've seen the kit that SmokinDiesel.com is selling that has the lift pump, pusher pump, and aeroquip lines. This is it. Has anyone purchased this setup? Do you like it? Has it lasted? If not, what would be the best way to replace the stock LP. I know that there hasn't really been much luck in this area, and no strong solution has really surfaced, but I would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks a lot! You guys have been a great help from the moment I bought my CTD.

Just got from work, and I'm feeling a little lazy,, so excuse me if my answers aren't clear, or detailed enough.

I have Andy and Dougs fuel pump setup.

It's loud.

Your truck will never starve for fuel.

They are very reliable.

The pumps will probably run high pressure on the '44.

They aren't hard to install.

SS lines look way cool.

Pumps sound awesome.

Extra fuel filter filters fuel before both lift pumps.

I helped my local mechanic shop install the pumps while lots of other stuff was being worked on.

I had DD1's and a PE COMP when this setup was installed.

You have to drill the frame to mount the pusher pump, and spin-on baldwin fuel filter.

My fuel pressure at Muncie was 35PSI on Prime 30 PSI running and about 22-25PSI WOT (My truck had an ECM short and would cut out with prolonged WOT)

No matter how big your injectors get, or how powerfull your box is,, this setup WILL Fuel it!

If you are going to be running less than ~350HP this setup would be overkill,, just relocate the original, or a new Carter Pump next to the fuek tank.

But, anthing over 350 could use this setup.

I ran 457HP/980TQ and have no fueling problems. (A smoking problem, yes :D but no lack of fuel)

These pusher pumps,, won't improve your MPG or HP, but will help your truck sustain high HP levels.

I've gone through several lift pumps,, my 1st replacement pump (under warrenty) lasted about 15K, 2nd replacement (under warrenty) lasted 2,500 miles. These pumps have gone for a long while 20K + with 400+ HP.

Mark Kendrick told me I'm killing my injection pump, but so far, no hard starts (under prime I have to crank one or two cranks longer), no problems with hot starts, and no fuel cavitation problems (aerating (sp?) the fuel).

If you have anymore questions feel free to ask, as I don't feel like I covered everything.

I remember we were in Terre Haute IN on the way to Munice and... . :p

I guess to sum it up,,,,

Pro's:

Pricey, but Well worth it (Mine have allready paid for themselves)

Extra fuel filter gurantees better filtered fuel, and fuel is prefiltered before reaching the lift pumps.

Longer intervals between fuel filter changes.

No fuel starvation,, even with insane injectors AND Boxes

EASY priming when replacing injectors, injection pump, or fuel filters. (I replaced a SUSPECT VP44, my fuel pumps did not kill it, it is now my "spare")

-6AN SS Lines and Aeroquip fittings get rid of fuel line restrictions.

SS Lines Look SO SWEET when you pop open the hood.

Cons:

Pricey (see above^)

Noisy when priming and first "Key-On" prime

Extra fuel pump and filter on frame rail has a risk of being damaged by road debris.

Higher pressure on the VP44 (some have said this is bad)

There ya go,

Um,, Ya,, not a fuel pump problem,, that was cuased by the ECM getting excessive diesel fuel, Engine Oil, and Anti-Freeze on it.

I had a problem with a broken return line, which in turn soaked the ECM with fuel,, I hadn't cleaned the motor yet, so I had alot of stray grease and oil on the side of the motor,, and my block is cracked,, leaking a trace of anti-freeze onto the ECM.

So I've given my ECM a hard time,, I guess it was pay-back time. No problems since then, and still on the same ECM!! :)

Remember the "Grumpy Trucker" ?? He had all the answers,, and would run you over if you parked next to him.

Thought you were lazy and tired? just razzing ya.

If I were you Otis, I would get the kit from Enterprise Engine. It is sufice for what many Rammers need. It is basicly the same kit, only "toned down" a little. Might be worth checking it out for the price difference if nothing else.

Andrew

p. s. "You got water in your fuel!!!"...

you get what you pay for

o_mccarroll

I too have the Smokindiesel.com set up and I think it is definatley worth the extra money. I have no idea what the Enterprise kit costs, nor do I care. I have never once been worried about not having enough fuel to push my truck to the limits, and I run it almost every week at the track. 24 PSI at idle, and 15 at WOT. Plus I think the pumps sound pretty cool, especially when your sitting next to somebody in one of those rice burners, and they here the pumps activate. The SS lines just finish the whole thing off. I do hear through the grapevine though that they have an even better setup now, so you may want to call them.

Whichever way you go, you will definately need something, and I don't think you will be dissapointed with this set-up.

The system that Ted is referring to is the PE4200 lift pump and aeroquip lines. This system replaces your stock lift pump. The PE4200 is located back near the tank. I am not sure of the price of the new fuel system, but I have had it installed in my truck for two months and I love it. I did have ADT's previous dual pump system but I still did not have the best of luck with the carter pumps.

The PE4200 is a thing of beauty... you have to see it to believe it. The pump also carries a two year warranty from Product Engineering. There are several of us on the TDR running this pump including Doug Smith (Jetpilot) and a couple of others I can't think of right now.

Here is the link to the pump info on ADT's website...

PE4200

Give Andy or Doug a call... they will take care of you...

Here is their contact info...

I worry a little about having too high fuel pressure. I don't plan on bombing any further (see sig above). I just want a system that will work. I am leaning heavily toward the PE4200. I'm going to call ADT this afternoon and get some more info. Any input on how difficult the installation is? Do they supply good schematics/diagrams/instructions? Are they selling a complete system to replace the stock lift pump setup, or will I have to buy a bunch of other stuff to go with the kit? In other words, are they giving me everything I need to do the installation?

Thanks a bunch, guys.

Otis.

I would trust anything that Andy and Doug are selling. These guys are really top notch and really have their heart put in to their products.

Just my $. 02

Otis...

Like I said give them a call. Andy or Doug will be able to set you up with exactly what you need. The install is very straight forward, not confusing at all. See the link I sent you earlier for their contact info.

Jeff

I put one on a month or so ago and havent had any problems yet. About 3000 miles on it. You could do it cheaper if you sourced everything yourself. I personally like the one stop shopping on this mod.

I have almost 15,000 on mine since Andy and Doug installed it, and I haven't had any problems at all, even though I have never changed the filter... oops I mean I have changed it during regular intervals the whole time.

So Otis,, You buy the kit from ADT yet? or are you still gonna settle with lift pump problems? :D

Call Andy or Doug. Just lay out the parts before you start installing and it ain't hard.

NIKE just do it

Merrick-

Ordered the PE4200 kit yesterday. I spoke with Doug. He was very helpful and easy to deal with. He even offered to give me his cell phone number so I could call him during the install if I had any problems. That's service!

Doug said that it would be a week or so before I get my pump because ADT sent a broken PE4300 back to Product Eng. to find out what went wrong. They want to make sure that if there is any trouble with the pump that it is fixed before they sell any more. It is impressive when a company will take that kind of initiative to produce a superior product.

I will give the full report once the install is complete. I'm not driving the truck until I get the install done. It runs just fine, but I don't want to take any chances until this LP issue is fixed. Maybe I'm being overcautious...

Otis.

Alright... finally got the PE4200 pump and lines. Took a little while for ADT to get the pump out to me, but that's okay because Doug overnighted me his stock lift pump to install in my truck until he could get me the PE unit. Thank you Doug, and I'll have your pump back to you once I get the PE on the truck!

Installation looks simple enough, but I haven't decided how I'm going to mount the @#!% thing. Any suggestions from people who've seen this setup? Are you drilling/tapping the frame (which I would rather not do)? I am leaning towards fabricating some sort of bracket/clamp to mount the pump to which can be clamped to the frame (if that makes any sense to anyone but me). Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Otis.

Stupid question:

In case of an accident, will an electric replacement pump shut off? (sometime before the tank is empty) Just curious... .

Otis,, use the plates that came with the pump, just drill three small holes in the frame.

BigHammer, the 2nd lift pump is driven off of a relay that is triggered right off the original LP. The second pump does exactly what the original LP does.
