`95 3500 TRUCK HAS TONS OF POWER ,BUT WHEN TAKING OFF,OR IDLING FOR A BIT AND TAKING OFF. IT REALLY BELTS OUT BLACK SMOKE. . JUST BOUGHT TRUCK. DO NOT KNOW WHEN VALVES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED. MILEAGE IS ALSO POOR. 15MPG EMPTY,WITH 3. 54`S AND STICK. RIG HAS NO MODS. ANY IDEAS ??

Check that your intake hoses are in the right place and the clamps are tight. Change the air and fuel filter. If you don't know the history of the truck it would be wise to check the valves and timing. Check your injection pump for signs of the tamper proof seals being broken, this could indicate that someone who didn't know quite what they were doing fooled with the pump.

95 3500 5-speed 3. 54 gears, that is a start. It would be kelpful to know if you are at high altitude or not, cold or hot, ETC. For it to be belting out the smoke something has changed from the factory settings. I would guess that at a minimum the cover has been off the pump and the star wheel is turned in a few or a dozen clicks. Someone may have slid the plate and the AFC housing too. Do you have guages? If so what are the EGT's like? Some more info would help us help you RJ.

My first guess would be a clogged-shut air filter... lousy mileage and big smoke = no air.
