what are you guys using??? I've got an electric, dont like it (old) to tempermental. looking to possibly useing the power steering pump or my Fisher OE belt pump but that pump is V-belt driven, I think i could mount it were the A/C is supposed to be but the CUMMINS has a serpentine belt . should I change the pulley on the pump? were should I look for it?

snow plow

I've plowed for the last 10 years with both my 91 and 92. The 91 has an electric pump and the 92 has a mechanical pump driven by a V belt from a pulley mounted in back of the fan. The pump itself is mounted on a bracket that fits over the alternator. This was a kit from Diamond/Myers.

As far as which I prefer- I give the electric an advantage with the diesel because it operates at the same speed with the engine idling. The mechanical is slower unless you rev the engine which is a pain when you are doing a lot of pushing back corners. The electric is also a neater hook-up. I have not had any major problems with either system. Others may have different opinions.

Frank,

I use to use Meyers hydraulic fluid(you know the blue stuff) in my Western Pump. It tends to leak a little but the plow moves a hole lot faster, I could move the plow side to side fast enough to shake the truck like a dog wagging its tail. And when it gets below 0, I didn't have to worry about the pump freezing up. I also think the western pump drew less power from the battery with the meyers fluid in it. I also used it in my old W350 Snow Commander with the engine driven hydraulics, had the same effect, and the pump was quieter.

Frank,

I have been thinking of a belt run pump too. My first idea was to mount another pulley where the fan was (I have had it off since the end of August). With RD's concern about the pump turning slow I guess I would experiment with a smaller pulley where the fan was to drive the pump faster. Just pulling an idea out of the air or another place.

Keep us posted,

hhhhmmm?:D never thought of the slow spin thing!:( might go see the diamond dealer. 30 min away. keep you posted. what is the shaft size one the A/C compressor?with some welding and torching I could hook it to the fishers v pulley and adjust the pump so the belt will run true. ya think? thanks again.

Frank

dzlbuzz: you have the fan OFF??? instead of a cold front?

Fan? What fan?

Frank,

With a little work it does come off. I am one who has a little more time than money. The truck temp guage reads just fine.

Maybe you could find a spare compressor, take the pully off, slap it on the front of the Fisher pump. Take the AC pump off, temp mount it to the side, keeping the charge in the system. Mount the plow pump where the AC was then use the part time switch in the AC pulley to run the plow.

Just one of my brain snow storms.

All for now
